Pileated Woodpecker

This is one of my favorite birds, a big woodpecker.  I saw one maybe 7 years ago.  The other day one flew across the road and landed in a big fir.  I got a good view there and it flew up the hill and landed twice before disappearing.  Got a good view of the wing patches when it flew.

Seconded, they're amazing. Like bigger yellow-belly Sapsuckers that don't suck sap, both RECK trees and mighty fast. Pretty cool stuff considering their size.

Their red heads are super cool.  Just a beautiful bird.

Had a Downy Woodpecker visit me a couple days ago.  This bird showed me every angle and was going off on mostly acorns but a few spots and literally could have cared less I was right there.  Pretty little dude indeed.  Not sure if it was going for bugs in the acorns or if they actually eat acorns too.
