Ripped filter on flowhood; repairable?

I have a flowhood that I was going to sell to another member. It is a 24 x 24 Envirco Mac 10 IQ Fan Filter Unit.
Before anyone says this is not a flowhood, please understand that neither is THIS or THIS or THIS. A true flowhood has a work surface with a HOOD surrounding it, not just a blower and a filter attached to a box and thrown on a table.
Anyway that is not what this post is about. When I removed the filter from my unit, I found a series of small rips on the back. Here is a picture of the full filter

and here is a closeup of the rips

I have read that you could cover these rips with silicone and the filter will still be reliable if done right. Can anyone weigh in on this, or give any other insight on how to repair it?
The unit is a custom made size so getting a new filter would be a little more difficult than it would otherwise be, hence why we are looking into the possibility of repair.
Thanks.

Not sure why you are so picky with your etymology.....those are all flowhoods. as is the big orange tiger stiped thing in my sig...
Is that the prefilter? if so a tear isn't a big deal.

You can patch it with masking tape, but don't inoculate infront of the damaged area. Might want to flip it around so that the damaged area is at the top away from your bench. Then get some fine wire mesh and staple it around the filter so its protected in the future.
Gr0wer poked holes through his filter with a scalpel and did a write up on how he fixed it. Ill link you up later if you cant find the write up.

Why would that be a custom size? The 24 x 24 Envirco Mac 10 IQ is currently still listed on their website. Should be easy to get a replacement. Envirco units are nice and work very well.

Any opinions as far as silicone to the tears? It's a new filter and would hate to have to replace it. They're very expensive.

The tears are on the back side of the OPs filter. The envirco units already have a grate over the filter face.

Try it. It apparently works. If I were keeping it I would just silicone it until I get a replacement filter. I dunno if I would sell it with a silicone patched filter though. I would expect a steep discount since a filter replacement is in the new owners future.

I once had a friend's cat shred up one of mine a fair bit. Kept using it for like a year I think, no issues. I'd chagrin whenever it caught my attention, but just got back to work. It didn't increase my contamination rate (which would have been obvious since I effectively never get contaminations in my non-experimental work)
