Hello, I've been hunting Morel's for 8 years or so and always thought I'd like to learn more about mushroom ID. This year I took the plunge and got a couple sources that are...ok. Not great, but ok for my skill level. I found a couple that I can not even get close on with my sources and several internet searches. So, I joined this forum for help. Problem is, I took the pics before I knew this site existed, so I don't have all the info required to post an ID request (spore print, bruising, scent, up close pics, measurements), So, I guess my first question is: Should I even bother trying to figure out how to get my pics uploaded and posted? Note, I have no interest in actives, or really edibility at this point (other than Oysters, what I'm trying to expand to first). It's just an interest in the flora and fauna around me.

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

Spore print color:
Very important!

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

welcome KsBogtrotter

Some extra info besides photos is usually useful to get accurate ids, nonetheless it is not always required in order to identify the specimens as long as the photos are clear enough and show the mushroom important features... therefore i think you can upload the photos that you have...

cheers

Ok, thanks. I just didn't want to get yelled at on my first post for not reading the rules. Lol I can give info other than what I have listed, to the best of my recollection. I got them uploaded, I think...

I found this one last spring in central Kansas in a stand of trees that is mostly Cottonwood with Elm, Osage Orange and Walnut mixed in. The soil is pretty sandy with a lot of leaf litter. What struck me about this one is, it's pretty morel-ish. Colors, textures, hollow interior and it felt like a morel. However, I can not find any morel's or false morel's that have this shape. I asked a couple friends that also hunt morel's, and they were not familiar with it either. Also, there were 8 to 12 of them in a 30 or so ft diameter circle with no discernible pattern that I remember. I had found morel's in that area in the past, too.

Ok, I may need help attaching a file. I can see that they are in my gallery, but I cant seem to attach them. Whatever I did on that last one didn't work. I'll re-read instructions and get back to you...

Welcome!

You need to copy and paste the code into your post to attach the pictures after you upload them.

I think it may be Mitrophora semilibera. Not entirely confident but maybe you can rule that in or out from memory, idk.

If you are in the US maybe also read this including the discussion for similar suggestions. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/morchella_punctipes.html

Yeah, looks like a slightly dried up half free morel to me as well.

That's as close as I could find as well, but I questioned it because I couldn't find any pictures online that had a flat top. They all had the point and a small skirt. All 10 or so of these just had a flat end and no skirt. Basically just a cylinder with a morel looking end. That's why I thought it might be something different. I appreciate you guys taking a look.

Well there is those weird look alikes that have a very brittle top, it's not usually flat capped but I've seen some pretty odd looking ones. It also isn't half free. It's connected only a tiny bit at the very top of the stem. They also have a white, almost weblike pith in the stem. Verpa's I think they're called. I honestly don't think that's what they are.

I'd guess the cap got flattened out from getting dry. Were they maybe found in an area they gets some direct sunlight?

I would say very little to no direct sunlight. They were in a mature tree grove. Only what would filter through the leaves on the trees. Although, now that I think about it, it could have been early enough that the leaves were not fully set on...

I found another pic I took the same day at the same lake, and the trees are well covered. So I'll go with the little to no direct sunlight.
