SloppyJoseph's Big Gulp Tek Enoki Round 2!!!!

Alright finally got around to doing this again!!! I know it will work- and I changed up a few things as per advice from fellow Shroomery cats- this is WBS (so smaller and more inoculation points than the original oats test run), it's pasteurized oak instead of pine this time, and I increased my spawn ratio- two qts WBS to one bag oak sawdust (did 1 qt oats to 1 bag pine sawdust the first time).
If you will remember the first run all contamed. This time- instead of using an LC- I used wedges from a plate that was from a wedge from a Shroomery cat- so fingers crossed it worked this time!!
I made different sized holes to try to gauge the amount of FAE/CO2 enoki need to flourish- and for colonization have duct taped bottom holes and micropore (note not transpore that I use for sterile needs) taped the top hole.
Really hoping this works this time! Enoki are my favorite edible - it's been far too long cultivating to not have my own. Fingers crossed!!
2 qts, one 5lbs bag, 25 big gulps and a jar.

Seems a lot of effort for so little substrate though, wouldn't filling those cups full/almost full be more worthwhile? I have only ever seen enoki grown in those 1L~ substrate bottles.

You may be correct- but this could work out well- I don't know that's why I'm giving it a shot!
And yeah I payed $6 for 25 cups.

You could fill it up more, but then the unit isn't it's own FC. End goal is definitely to use the whole gulp as a singularity. Bottles or a cup filled all the way to the top requires either a GH or something else to make the fruiting chamber. That's been the idea from the start. To give them cap space to grow inside. Something you could easily move in and out of a refrigerator. Because cold shock seems to be a trigger for these guys? Idk much about growing enoki so I leave that stuff to TA. But from my understanding this might be successful and from my past experiences the right culture of any smaller mushroom could benefit from having a personal fruiting chamber like this..

All of my cases are obviously cubes. But it can be conducive to enoki fruiting conditions if done right. It reminds me of commercial bottle grows in a way still. It has the potential to produce yields proportionally

But me and TA are having a good time with this I think because of its potential! I just hope there's success in these this time, I got faith in you bro!
A few questions, what temps are these going to be kept in during colonization? Fruiting? And how many quarts do you think in that bag of sawdust? 4 or 5 you think? Just tryna get a handle on the spawn ratio you are using

Yep, even though I have a pretty good GH, when I get a bunch of blocks going again it fills up fast, and the ones I get in the store I do not think have a deep sub.
Quote:

Bingo- that was my initial and still most important aspect of this whole endeavor.
Quote:

This is pretty big too. The quality enoki I get from my local Asian mart are very long, thin, compact, and super straight. I'm almost convinced they somehow grow them in the bags you buy them in. This got me to thinking how I could ensure their straightness- when pictures of sawdust block grows I've seen have them twisting and turning- and are often sparser than those I purchase. Combine that with the fact that they need a CO2 rich environment, yet still maintain some FAE, and have to cold shock them to get them to pin, then suddenly this Tek becomes attractive. A lightbulb went off when I saw SloppyJoseph's Tek- all the requirements for enoki can be achieved through this- and seeing as how there is less information on them readily available than most other species, I can experiment with the CO2/FAE ratio at will until I pinpoint what they need.

Paramount. I enjoy mycology more than just about anything else, and the idea of becoming a DIY citizen scientist- testing, recording, discovering- is a palpable ecstasy
Quote:

Around 68-72 F
Quote:
Fruiting?
Will cold shock to pin at around 37F, then I will split them up- some in the fridge- some same as colonization, maybe even some outside. I want verifiable evidence.
Quote:

On my first run I did 1 qt to one 5lbs bag because that seemed to work just fine for oyster blocks, but now I am doing 2 qts to see what happens. Also this run is WBS instead of oak, and a wedge clone not an LC.
Thanks for laying it out like that man! I'm really excited about the prospects- and if I got the moisture level wrong I will be able to throw them into the GH as well. I like this because one wedge went to one plate, went to two jars, went to one bag, went to 25 big gulps- a perfect scenario for experiment- which I am all about.
One thing about this site is we have citizen scientist testing out new techniques that then get peer reviewed. We are creating science study. I want to be a part of that, and I want all of you to be as well. We are just now as a species barely beginning to scratch the surface of mycology, and this forum is on the forefront of discovery.
Anyways I know I just rambled a bit- but I love this science, these people, the entire mycoweb of life.
Thanks again for the inspiration SloppyJoseph- you are a hero.

Im no hero man, nor am I anything special. I just had an idea, and our ideas merged and lets see if we get something to come to fruition It could be really special, I know how much you've been wanting to conquer these so I'm really pulling for this on this go around.
Should you maybe toss a couple of them in your GH without the dome lids for fruiting?
If they literally fruited in the fridge that would be so cool. I just feel like they might want cooler temps than normal room temp

Quick update! Mycelium growth on all 25 looks STRONG and not a dash of green amongst it- big difference from last time around. The enoki definitely prefer oak to pine- and I'm sure the increased spawn rate and increased inoculation points didn't hurt! We are at about 90% colonized. Will let you know when I start moving to the fridge!

Quick question: enoki is a very whispy mycelium- how can I tell when to cold shock them?

5 are slightly contamed but will probably still fruit. 2 are goners. 7 now put in the fridge- various air exchange to see what works best. 11 still colonizing.

Why do you think a few of them contamed out?

Not totally sure. It wasn't the spawn, so could have been patches of partially sterilized sub, or not pasteurized enough on the other end. Could have also just been how dirty the cups were. I didn't alcohol bath them like I said I would and I'm kinda kicking myself for that now. I will next run for sure though.

Just some diluted bleach solution to clean them out is fine. Same goes for any reusable fruiting chamber between spawns

It's really only minor contams on a few of them so I might get some fruits off of them before they succumb.
