Mental health break after trip....

So my friends friend, M, is an experienced tripper shrooms lsd done it plenty of times everythings always been good.
Last week he and my friend tripped on some L that my friend had in his stash, this stuff had been being eaten, was good consistently and had been tested with a test kit for a positive id.
Literally M only took a hit of known stuff with a best friend, in a familiar setting, trip went fine all was good. Two days later M's girlfriend calls my friend asking if M had been acting weird, friend says no just normal tripping M before he went home. Apparently now M has had a total mental break, doesnt really know whats going on, muttering things that dont make sense. Its bad enough that now hes in a mental hospital/some kind of mental rehab facility.
Wtf, i understand some people being vulnerable to certain drugs, i get that you can take too much and do psychological damage to your mind but this guy had tripped way harder, was experienced and the trip went fine. He was fine until the next day or so.
Has anyone heard of this happening? Kinda putting me off tripping, that and guy who i work with just died of heart attack in his late 30s. He was healthy, not obese, worked out. All this horrible stuff happening to good guys who i thought were being healthy and safe.

Whose to say the drugs did it at all. If you say he tripped fine and was fine the next day then it could be so many other things.
Basically we are all ticking time bombs, tomorrow is never promised, so don't let dying hold you back but embrace death. The least resistance in your life the better off you'll be. Afterall everything is in a constant state of decay, even us, so consider everything temporary.
Nothing is stagnant, everything is static. Sorry to hear about your friends, I lost good friends in my early twenties it's rough stuff.

Happened to me on only 1 hit of L so sometimes this stuff happens however it was totally my fault because I took it with such the wrong mindset. It set me up for a flashback one week later and it was not visual at all just mental and felt like overheating/panic attack and I entered the LSD mindspace again. So many bad things happened in that trip leading up to it though even outside of my prior mindset so it was just the perfect storm.
I never got that severe though like what happened with your friend, nothing even close to mental hospital status. Just felt a little more burnt out and a little more alienated from society. And never minding that my set and setting was HORRIBLE but also the fact that this is LSD and has a long history of sending people over the edge thus making it maybe more likely to happen now since you're opening yourself up to that mad world. This seems to happen on LSD more than other psychedelics so I wouldn't be put off tripping completely.
Maybe it's just time to switch to more mindful substances such as mushrooms, ayahuasca, DMT, san pedro (mescaline) etc.
LSD isn't a particularly "grounding" entheogen.

Give us more info. What was the dose that M took? Does M has a history of mental illnesses in his or her family? What was his/her mental state? Was he or she going through a rough patch when attempting to take psychedelics?
