Started last year in vocal performance, now going for psychology. Hoping to work doing psychedelic research and drug harm reduction education.

I'm getting a late start to the game as well, but as someone has already said, after 12 years of working I'm ready as hell to put the effort needed into something that will both interest and challenge me.
2 weeks until school begins in Canada though. I'm taking a Biotechnology course in college for 2 years and if I enjoy it, do well, and if my current goals don't completely change in that time, it will put me on track to get a BSC in Neuroscience in another 2.5-3yrs.

How're you going to apply that? Cultivating fungus on Mars? Researching alien mushroom species?
Haven't exactly figured that out yet, but I am pretty interested in the idea of terraforming Mars using fungi. I'm really just studying the things I enjoy, not worrying about what I'm gonna do with it until later lol. I had a astrobiology teacher back in community college, that'd be a sweet class to teach lol. So maybe teaching? Idk! Hbu??
I've always considered that future civilizations would send spores to habitable planets, and instigate multi-cellular evolution of the fungi or bacteria by sending viral components to change their DNA. That way, humans could make a planet more sustainable for life well before landing people there. Seems like it'd be cool to work on something like that.
Yeah definitely seems viable. I believe one of the really well known mycologists have started some ideas for terraforming with fungus. Stamets I think?

Try to get research experience. Also if you are planning on going to grad school start reading the primary literature now, because you're going to be doing a shit load of that.

....I'm just going to start with a couple classes the first semester to get back into the groove of school . Still not sure what exactly I'm going to pursue/major in, I'll figure it out after a semester or two, but certainly something in the fields/area of botany, ecology, mycology, phytochemistry .
Also might go the direction of getting a certificate in horticulture from the JC, and then start going to the California School of Herbal Studies.
I love learning, and I was always one of the top students in my class/school, but I fucking hate going to school, I really do.....I just want to get it over with .

.
I went back at the tender age of 26 last Janauary. As others have noted, school seems easier when you go back after years of working. I look at so many 18/19 year old students and see myself in them, and just want to tell them they're doing it all wrong, but I know they won't listen, just like I didn't when I was that age!

My wife has a degree in quantitative economics and is studying to become an actuary. She says you can get it with pretty much any degree, but it will be with your own time and your own efforts (fucking years). Pursuing it from the get-go is your best bet.
I have a degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics.

And this. I didnt apply until I was 25-26. I spent my youth partying and wasting time. Get it out of your system while you can. Dont start school until you know what you want to do and you're ready to take it seriously. I think the graduation rate at my university is roughly 35%. This is mostly due to kids enrolling fresh out of highschool with no idea or passion for what theyre doing. They waste their time and money, and then they drop out.
