Best new Android phone..?
    #23569330 - 08/23/16 02:22 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I have to get a new phone.

I currently have a Galaxy S3. I had an S5, but broke it several months ago and got this S3 back running to bridge the gap between then and now.

I do like the Galaxy series phones... I'm not sure what number they're up to now, however.  Seven?

Anyways, I'll be going either tonight or tomorrow.

Any suggestions as to what I should look in to getting and why...?

Thanks in advance.

I should add, I did really like the S5 I had and wouldn't mind getting another one, but if 6 or 7 is better for whatever reason, I'd like to know that.

Idk if iphones are under my carrier.

But from what I've seen of them, I personally wasn't very impressed... Although, that may be just because I've been using galaxies for years.

I know a samsung rep who has the S8.  I haven't seen it myself though.

I personally wouldnt get any androids not made by Samsung.

Galaxy S7, but I think a new model is coming out soon (S8?)
OnePlus3
Nexus Sailfish (released this month or next, not quite out yet)

Personally, I ***HATE*** the Samsung interface, bloatware, etc. and won't use one unless it's been rooted and the more standard Android OS ROM is installed.  But I understand the hardware is really good.  It's like a butterface version of a phone.

The galaxy s7 is widely considered the best of the current generation.

OK.. Has the 7 been out for a while? Gotten all the bugs out?
That's the main reason why I usually don't get the NEWEST phone.

iPhone 7 should be out soon, probably won't have anything ground breaking :mad2:

Yeah, the S7 has been out for a bit now, the S8 will be out soon that's why the reps have them.

yeah i was just being a dick mostly, I'm pretty indifferent to the brand loyalties. The latest is the S7 Edge and it's pretty cool.
Not enthusiastic about anything running a google product and the samsung bloatware is fuckin awful, but it's a nice handset and the display is great

iphone 6 if it's under your carrier is also a really sturdy handset contrary to what you might have heard around, screen is slightly less robust than the comparative generation of galaxies and the camera bulge is a bit annoying but the current iteration of ios is really pleasant to use and lacks the annoying samsung bloat

I did some light reading and the s7 and the s7 edge sound the best.

Not sure if they'll both be able to get or not, though.

One billion bullshit apps (seriously 5-6gb worth iirc) that ship with the phone. It's worse if you use verizon but since you mentioned yours might not have iphones i doubt you're with them.
As far as I know you should be able to uninstall most of the bloat apps that ship with the phone

I have a Droid Turbo 2, very reliable phone.

http://www.androidheadlines.com/2016/03/phone-comparisons-motorola-droid-turbo-2-vs-samsung-galaxy-s7.html

The main reasons I think it's a good phone are that the battery lasts about 3 days on a single charge, and the screen is completely shatterproof. You could hit it with a hammer and drop it and it wont shatter the screen. So the phone should last a long time, and has had no trouble running any apps I've put on it at all. I'm not much of a mobile phone gamer, but it can handle any of the major games out there.

The S7 is a bit faster, but it's negligible really. Droid Turbo 2 comes with 64 GB of storage space hard slotted, and I got a free 64 GB SD card when I bought it bringing it up to 128 GB total. Built in wireless charging. 21 MP camera, 5 MP in front (takes pretty awesome pictures).

If the S7 is cheaper when you look at phones, go with that. But if the Droid Turbo 2 has some kind of special price and is cheaper then the S7, I'd give it a consideration as it's a solid phone and will never break on you (or they will replace it free). I don't even pay for insurance on mine because there is no point.

No money will be coming out of my pocket, so that's not really a consideration.

Although, my last 2 phones went because I broke the screens on them.
Perhaps that's something to consider then... Or else, a better case or something for the Galaxy.

Here is someone smashing it with a hammer. He destroys the phone, but the screen stays intact.

I'd definitely suggest you shell out the fifty bucks or so for an otterbox or equivalent case if you're going to get a brand new current gen handset
Especially given that a lot of carriers have fuckin terrible insurance plans that either have outrageous deductibles and/or a million fuckin exclusions that render the coverage inapplicable.

Just to clear the air, dont get any apple phone. All the iphones suck. They are kid phones

Basically, they have your newest and updated phones like your galaxy s6, s7, and edge which is just a selling platform for more battery and a very shitty curved edge which will annoy you with the touch screen. Basically they will just have better batteries for the newest models. Not much has changed really. Theres not too much you can do with them anymore.

Your gonna want the note 7. The S series is your standard droid phone. If you would prefer that which is a bit smaller and no stylus get the s6. The s7 is new, but you'll hold the s6 and wonder why they made the 7. The cameras on them are already 4k video, so theres not too much upgrade value there. They're the same exact size. The only good feature (which is the only thing I ever disliked about my note) is that the s7 has a memory slot for your sd cards, and that its amoled. Which you already thought the s6 was because they're insanely bright.
The note 5 never got this feature for memory which was very ballsy at only 32gb and my software on it is 8.53gb, so I get a good 23gb of space. I wouldnt get the s7 unless its the same price as the 6.

Now, for my recommendation I would get the new note 7. Hands down. Not sure if its out yet, but it will be worth the wait. Just ask to see a note 5 if they have one. They skipped a note 6 completely and went from 5 to 7 fyi. I got the note when it came out last august 1 year ago, and its held up very nicely. Not a problem with it. And going from apple to samsung I actually enjoy the software updates and what they did this past year.
I dont have a single scratch on it anywhere, and its still exceptionally fast. It will load nearly anything instantly. Holding it without a case feels amazing. It records in UHD at 3840x2160, FHD 60fps 1920x1080, 1280x720 etc. The music player is very loud and It has great treble/kicks. One of the very cool things is that it operates like a pc where you have system files etc on it, and can create your own to move photos/videos in them. Its basically everything you would ever need in a phone, except its much larger and has its own stylus.

The stylus is awesome too. It feels really cool on the phone. Just be careful cause a new samsung one costs 40$. It nearly feels like a tablet. At first I was wowed at going from an iphone 5s to a screen that was nearly double the size, but now I cant see myself using anything smaller.
Im glad I chose the galaxy note over the galaxy 5/6 at the time. The S series is your basic phones and the notes are the larger more operable devices. Theres no reason not to get the note over the S series. If you watch videos or porn it will make it much better.

My contract is for another year so I might pick up the note 7 next year. I could definitely use my note 5 though, for the next 2 years atleast provided nothing happened to it. Im proud I kept it in great condition with my otterbox. And yeah I dislike cases on my phones too. But for an expensive phone you're going to want one. I have mine with lifeproof glass also. Went through 2 in 12 months, 20$ each is nothing for my phone not having a single scratch.

depends on what you think makes a phone "the best"
I personally love samsung
imo they are good and durable
mine has dents but no cracks
and I've had older models at the bottom of pools that still worked fine

I'm actually glad this topic is up because I'll be in the market soon too
my gf has the s6 edge and she says it's not worth the extra $100 to get the edge over the standard s#
i'm not sure if there are any differences other then the screen

Well, my girl has an S6, so if anything I'd get the 7 just to not have the same phone and get em confused (if they don't have color options)...

I do like the notes, but Holy hell they're so big! Idk if I could pocket that thing all day or not.

Get the LG g5. The reason why I like it better than any Samsung phone right now is because it has a modular design, which means you can swap out the battery like a magazine on a gun. So you can get a spare battery and a charging port so any time you're low you can swap it out and instantly have a fresh 100% battery. It's so satisfying to just click a new battery in and never be tethered to an outlet.  And it has an amazing camera, and a removable SD card slot. I will never buy a phone without a removable battery and SD card.

I'm digging it.

Finally got to download Pokémon  played that for a little while. Had to stop and ask some random people how to play since it wasn't working. I guess the app had froze, so that's why it wasn't working.

But yeah, I'd recommend the S7 to anybody in the market.

I have one more question for y'all...

On this phone it has the standard internet browser and it also has the Google Chrome browser.
Is there an advantage to using one or the other?

I just used the standard (Samsung?) one and did all my bookmarking and such through that and that's what I'm currently using, but wondering if Chrome has advantages that I'm not aware of...?

Thanks.

Chrome has a lot of features, but I have no idea about the default browser's perks.

BlackBerry just released a "low" priced (~$300) Android without any keyboard, touted as the most secure Android right now. I need a new phone myself, but I (really) like keyboards, and they are scheduled to release a new Android with (keyboard) in several months. So, I'm tempted to just get a refurbished Classic/similar in the mean-time.  If they continue losing market share so quickly, I could see that release never happening, though.

My 1st "smartphone" was an HTC Merge and it had a slide-out keyboard. I vowed that all my phones would have that after using that for awhile and then needing a loner phone that didn't have a keyboard (like pretty much every phone out now)... I hated using the screen to type. I hated the amount of screen the keyboard needed when it was in use.

Fast forward a little while and I needed a new phone. There wasn't any phone available with an actual keyboard, so I had to get one without... And now I don't think I'd use a phone with a keyboard  funny how that is...

Just takes a little while to get used to things... But once you got it, it's fine.

I did like that phone quite a bit, though... It was super super heavy though.

I've had a couple touch-only phones myself, but I still like keyboards for whatever reasons. Especially with as big as phones are these days, I'd happily trade in ~1" height for a QWERTY keyboard. Blackberry's Passport IMO was just as comfortable to type on as sliders like that HTC-

My backup for the past several years is a ~2011 LG that looks almost identical. AFAIK, Blackberry is the only brand available through Verizon which has released any recently. I'd be fine with an old phone like that HTC, if they could still run updated apps. Another reason I'm unsure what to do is that the next keyboard BB has had very little info leaked about it, only that they are planning to release one with a keyboard, and one without, this October and next February (With no hint of which/when). I would be pretty frustrated if 5wks from now they release the one with keyboard.

I'm honestly shocked that Blackberry is still around.

I don't understand what the big deal was back (what was it?) 8-10 years ago with them.

Well back then they had the best phone operating system. It got eclipsed over the years by both android and iphone OS's.

They were at the forefront as business phones and had a lot of shit that nobody else was doing at the time. Full QWERTY keyboards and the like.
What really made them the craze as a business solution was push email integration. It was a huge deal that nobody was doing outside of Asia at the time, but RIM never really continued to innovate after the 2011 blackberry crash.

It's definitely a miracle that they're still around.

Good times   my 1st cell was in 2003 when I got my 1st apartment.  So, probably the 2270-2275-or 2280.. Not sure which.

My mom got a cell in 97-98 and had one of these from then. I don't even think I saw a cell then that wasn't a Nokia.

That Nokia of mine flew out of my pocket on the Superman ride at Six Flags... I got a call a week later from them saying they found it in the mud. They sent it back to me and besides it being caked with dirt and a few dings and low battery, that fucker worked fine  tough little fuckers.

I'd like to see a modern phone stand up to that.

The galaxies are a little bloated, but they have very powerful hardware. One that is rooted with a custom rom can be very fast but right now there are not many roms out for the galaxy s7. Another thing I like about having a rooted phone is that the security patches are released very quickly instead of Samsung deciding when to do a OTA release.

Android security patches are released monthly.

I have noticed a lot of useless software on this thing... Although, for now at least, it doesn't seem to hinder anything.

I've never been a fan of the keypad inputs on these things so I've used SwiftKey for the past 3-4 phones I've used. Which is great because once you buy it (it was like $5 I think) it transfers to every new phone I've gotten... So that's cool.
I hate writing messages and stuff on other people's phones. Just used to SwiftKey now I guess.
It's not THAT different, but enough so to where I can definitely notice the differences.

They are on the verge of bankruptcy after declining in sales for years AFAIK, like SVS said they were the first good smart phones, and the top choice (by far) for businesses due to their software. Lately, they've been aiming for security, are reportedly succeeding.

The bloatware affects the performance and battery of the phone by running in the background, so you wouldn't notice any hindrance they cause unless you compare to a de-bloated phone.  I already posted my opinion on the Samsung TouchWiz bloatware earlier in the thread and I still recommend remove them but you'll have to root your phone to do it properly--that voids the warranty on your brand new phone so gotta weigh the options.
Swiftkey gets better as it learns your typing.  Chrome is better than the other browsers IMO.

I'm posting from my s7 edge for the first time.  Just got it last night.

Love it

Found one quirk in regards to shroomery.  On my old phone I'd click and hold my finger on my +1's and it would show me usernames.  Now, that doesn't work on my s7  just gives me option to save image of +1 button

I got my LG smartphone last black Friday for 15$ bucks new from stolenphone.com:lolsy:joking I got it from Amazon

Still works perfect,  fast and did everything I wanted an more

It's just a LG optimus Exceed 2
Verizon is my carrier, and I don't have any contract at only 45$ a month for unlimited texting n calling and no contract and a Gb of data, and WiFi use mostly everywhere nowadays

It's a outdated OS Android 4.4
I think there at 6.0 nowadays

I'll prolly update to a new OS when this one breaks

I've dropped this on hard wood floors many  times not a crack

I love a good smartphone

Now let's talk cell phone plans...

I want to share light on just how bad Canadians are getting dicked around.  I heard we have some of the highest cell phone rates in the world.  Not sure how true this is tho

So, for starters...in my area, unlimited data plans don't exist  and even if they did, I can't imagine the price

Here is the typical "deal" right now...

Pick a newer smartphone...like the s7, iPhone 6, brand new LG or whatever...

Contracts are mandated at 2 years

To get into a 2 year contract with one of these phones, you have to still pay up front on average 200 or more with stipulations on having a minimum plan of x amount of dollars

Now the plans with your new smartphone

Minimum $90-100 after tax and fees.  This gives you 2.5gb of data allowance per month.  Right now Roger's has a promotion tacking 2 extra gb on for 5 dollars on select plans

Most plans come standard with unlimited local calling and texting but often costs more for unlimited national calling and texting

The big thing now is share plans  I have two lines, two cell phones.  For two lines, unlimited national text and talk, and 5gb of SHARED data per month, it costs 190 plus tax

(Now they claim that 80 dollars of that bill goes to paying off the phones but I don't believe it)

I'm so jealous of your plans :frown:

Long distance calls are a thing of the past now in the US, as far as I know.

That sucks, man.

Every phone I've owned I just bought outright, fuck contracts. $200 is about the top end of what I'm willing to spend on a phone. The one I have is a Motorola "Moto G", couple years old but it does what I need it to do and has a fairly decent screen.

That's what I do too. I'd been on Virgin Mobile until last Spring when I got the Nexus 6P and hopped on Google's cell service. I couldn't be happier with it all.

Buying a phone outright doesn't negate terrible rates for data and phone bills tho

You can buy an older phone, 2 years or older for 200, and then here(bc anyway), you are still looking at like 70 a month or more for 2.5gb of data

I'll spend the extra 20-30 a month to get into the newer phones

I pay $45 a month with tax. Only thing is that when my company got bought out by Telus, it went from unlimited internet to 1 GB/month. I still rarely max it out unless I get careless with tethering. Their network's coverage is a lot better though and national long distance is still unlimited.

I don't really care too much about phones though. An extra 20-30 a month over 2 years is about $500-$700, and that's on top of paying ~$200 at the start you say? If I'm going to spend the better part of $1000 on an electronic device it would be on something like a nicer laptop, I'm not going to shell out that kind of money to do less on a smaller screen. I can wait until the phones going for $200 do what a $1000 phone does today.

Yes, you pay 45 plus tax for 1gb

On a brand new phone, the minimum plan is 2.5gb and is around 70 ish if you bought the phone outright

If you didn't, it would be 90 ish

Yeah that 20-30 adds up over 2 years I agree but my point was that no matter what way you slice It, we Canadians get screwed on rates

1gb would never work for me.  I smashed out 500mb just today with no videos, just Internet browsing and Facebook

I average 6 to 8gb a month

The payoff just isn't there for me I guess, either for data or a high end phone. Most of the time I want to do anything on the internet I'm somewhere where I already have wifi access, and if I really want to do shit on the go that would be impractical on my phone I can bring along my $100 Windows tablet and use that, tethering to my phone if necessary. If I wanted to watch shows/movies on the go I could just torrent them on the tablet ahead of time at home. No idea how much data we use on my home connection but the limit is 300 GB and we never go over any more. I used to torrent a lot more but it's impractical to keep enough storage space for everything.

But yeah I think our telco options are a lot shittier in Canada, it would be nice to have cheap and fast unlimited phone internet, cheap home gigabit etc but it's not happening. I feel like the phone service I get isn't really even worth what I pay.

Yes all valid points. I think the nature of my rural area makes wi-fi not that common as in the big cities.  I of course have it at home, but I work long shifts at work with a decent amount of ass time some days and I chew through data like a madman at work lol  no WiFi

I'd be better off reading a book.  80% of my data goes to Internet browsing

6 years ago, I posted exclusively with home computer on shroomery.  I can't remember a time I've posted from anything other than my phone in past few years now tho.

Yeah we definitely don't get what we pay for.  That's so true

Maybe turn off your phone once in a while?
I have a 1GB/month plan and after doing what I'd consider heavy use of data/browsing I haven't hit that 1GB point over an entire month for as long as I've been using it.  6-8GB/month is something I can't fathom, unless I lived on my phone 24/7.

LG V10
I went from the S3, to the S5, to the S6, and finally the LG V10. It's my favourite by far. The screen is massive, the sound is good, camera and graphics are on point. I ran it side by side with the Note 5 in the store (the V10 has a bigger screen with the secondary screen than the Note 5), and it ran everything faster (HD video, apps, games).
It also has expandable storage, and a removable battery; both things the Note 5 lacks.
I also found it to be sturdier, and very durable. My job puts my phone through a beating and I've dropped it multiple times. Not a dent.

Expandable storage is a big selling point for me, but for my current phone I settled for one without it. Leaving out a microSD slot is a really dumb trend though, it adds so much value and probably costs relatively little to include. I guess they're trying to force you to buy something with more internal storage, which is expensive and faster than you really need just for storing media files.
