how much BE counts as successful mushroom growing?
    #23568255 - 08/23/16 06:55 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

exaple 1 you use full 1 qt of mushroom grain spawn fruiting in the jar and get 10 dry grams. what is the BE? was this successful?
exaple 2 you use 3 full qt of grain spawn in a monotub with plain coir that you cooked properly. 8 qts of coir, yeild is 55 dry grams and fails on second flush. what is the BE?  was this successful? didnt it cost more in results of time and engery plus coir cost?

good BE for which species? 10g dried pan cyans is pretty awesome from 1 qt. cubensis not so much.

BE = wet mushroom output divided by dry weight of all ingredients. so you need to know dry sub weight in addition to grain weight to calculate BE.

But learning and knowledge is priceless

B.E is pretty much telling you whether or not if you were biological efficient

It's a lot easier to just measure ounces or grams per quart of grain and be done with it.  You should be getting on average a dry ounce per quart jar of spawn.  Two dry ounces per quart would be better.  And three is not unheard of.

Any less than an ounce per quart though, and you've got problems that need tending to.

I agree with that to most extent, but there's way too many people here throwing out their misinterpretation of what BE really is.

What is b.e. anyway (what does it stand for).  It sounds a lot like ROI

Bio Efficiency
I am so far from an expert that I would explain it the way I understand and some TC would come in and make me look dumb. So I will leave a definition to the experts.

EDIT:
heres a good (old) quote...

B/E stands for "biological efficiency".

An example of 100% B/E is this.

1000 grams of fresh mushrooms
derived from 1000 grams of dry Substrate
is 100% B/E.

P. Cubensis is quite capable of 200% B/E, under optimal circumstance.

People often ask why I shout out.

Do grain spawn, to bulk substrate, cased.

Here is why.

Standard PF type cake recipes only contain X amount of DRY weight BRF nutrient, per 1/2 or 1 pint cake.

A bulk substrate like dry compost, or h/poo spawned with wbs/grains is nearly 100% nutrient.

Figure it out YOURSELF. As an example.

Calculate the DRY weight of BRF that goes into 20 1/2 pint cakes.

Then, compare the B/E at 200%, with bulk substrate.
(which gives PF cakes B/E the benefit of doubt).

Calculate the B/E of 10 lbs of dry weight compost, or h/poo.

Post your answer.

The numbers speak for themselves.

I like BE as a tool simply because it forces you to note the water usage more than simply looking at dry weights will. If I know that I used 5000 ml of water in a substrate and I pull 3000 wet grams, that is telling me that that 2700 ml of water was pushed into the fruits. That's more than half. I find you can expect to see a quarter of the water lost to evaporation, humidification of the mono, and through cellular respiration. At that point if you end up with roughly a fifth to a quarter of the water left, you are making excellent use of it and you BE should reflect that in a high number.

If you are not seeing water usage like that then you can afford to use a higher spawn ratio or less substrate to see optimal use of fruiting space. You also may need to dial things in better.

I like to see at least 150% BE first flush from a culture I plan to keep around. Less than that sends it to the bin (excluding APE).

So since my quart jars hold just under half a pound of dry grain. Spawned to bulk and cased all nicely.  In a perfect world I should come close to a pound dry ?  Did i understand that right?

Depends on how many quarts. Sub size is key. One thing to note is that larger subs often have a harder time pumping out the same BE as smaller substrates.

But a quart will never produce a pound dry. If a quart with a half pound of dry grain spawned to a half pound of dry bulk materials put out a wet pound of fruits that would be 100% BE. That would dry down to 45 grams or so.
