In the moment, I thought Diaz had taken three rounds, but I'd have to rewatch it with a clearer head.
Which I probably will not be doing any time soon because it was overhyped and most certainly not the "greatest fight ever" as many people immediately labeled.
Was still a fun fight, but the rest of the card and the fight pass prelims were excellent fights.

Conor's take down defense won him this fight. Nate went for 4-5 take downs at crucial moments, any one of them could have completely changed the fight and Nate probably wins. Conor managed to stuff all of them until the final few seconds which didn't really hurt him since that round was already lost.

This is all exactly why fights shouldn't even go to judges. They should just keep fighting until someone gets knocked out or taps. That way, there is no disagreement about who won AND people won't spend half the fight (including the ENTIRE 5th round) running away from their opponent like Connor did. It was like he had been studying Mayweather fights...

I've done a lot of competitions with no time limits or weight classes and I can tell you that it just wouldn't work for tv. UFC events would be like 8 hours long just to get through 5 or 6 matches.
People generally play a more conservative game without the clock.

exactly. in theory it sounds good but we don't live in that world. that would make scheduling/selling commercial slots basically impossible. also there would have to be multiple fights going at once since these guys train and diet to hit their peak performance potential for literally one evening. not to mention holy FUCK, those fights would be boring since they would essentially be marathons, not fights. i don't know about you, but i've never had fun watching a marathon.
matt, what sports have you competed in other than MMA? the standard mixed bag of bjj competitions and a couple boxing/kick boxing bouts? (not throwing shade, i'm one of those basic packages myself lol)

very true. i have to go back and watch the 5th round because while i thought it was kindof close, i gave it to mcgregor whereas most people didn't. but yeah any of those takedowns could have resulted in a gracie JJ human-blanket in diaz smothering the shit out of mcgregor. the 2nd and 3rd rounds already really hurt his resolve even without going to the ground. was impressed with mcgregors takedown defence. thats the unfortunate thing about diaz, though. his JJ is awesome, but like most gracie JJ guys, his takedowns are not.

That's about it, NAGA, toughman, and a couple other things. In training for my latest tournament I realized I really like running and I may do some kinda endurance race once it's over.

right on. i like running to but my knees won't allow it =(. you ever have problems with your knees? i'm constantly trying to leverage how much training i can do (MMA type training and also weights+cardio) before my knees and shoulder start getting pissed off at me. pretty frustrating. i'd workout so much harder and more often if i had the joints for it

Ok, so fights need time limits. How about they dock points or something when people run away and avoid fighting then?

that i absolutely agree with. IMO the one judge who scored it 47-47 was right. you should not win a round where you turned your back and ran from your opponent several times in one round to avoid engagement/run out the clock, ect. thats complete bullshit. in theory, you could run in and engage once, win that engagement, then spent the rest of the round running in circles not letting your opponent get close enough to throw a strike. that's an absurdification of course but you catch my drift.
while i don't think diaz won that fight, i don't think mcgregor won either. stalling in BJJ competitions gets you docked points, and so it should be in MMA competition too. turning your back and running from a battle is what you do when you are defeated.

Timidity is technically against the rules, but I don't think I have ever seen someone lose a point because of it. Anderson Silva was warned about losing a point in his title defense against Demian Maia.

i've seen people get carded for it plenty in Pride FC (one of the first pro mma organizations which the UFC bought several years ago). interesting thing was - they didn't lose points for getting carded, they actually were deducted 10% of their purse. EACH CARD.

idk i mean, it's a strategy. Know when to engage your opponent and know when you should avoid an engagement. McGregors dodging helped him build his stamina back up while tiring Diaz out a little. Might have won him the fight in the end.

Dude, that was far beyond strategy.
I don't doubt PJ is wrong about the fix anyway. Seems like everyone was ready for a 3rd fight before the 2nd even ended.

Yea I don't like the running either, but at the end of the day its two men in a cage having a fist fight. They do give points for aggression so the guy running should be scoring less based on that alone....

Today's Fight Pass card was overall pretty lackluster. Ryan Bader won with a brutal knee KO. Good to see Gustaffson fight again. And good to see Arlovski not get KO'd and lose the rest of his brain matter. Three losses in a row, though. Time to hang up the gloves and do movies, please.

God damn Lawler out of 205 now.
I hope Ohio's coroner will be able to reattach Stipe's head to his neck once Alistair gets done with it.
Alistair - Annnnnd NEWWWWW HW CHAMP! I'm going to go with Gall (but I'd rather see Punk win) Werdum, but I'd rather see Travis split Fabby's goofy face open Faber over Rivera Jessica over Joanna (but I wouldn't put money either way on that one)
Anyways, I have a hundo over at Bovada for Alistair. Hopefully I can make up from my Diaz bet.
