cellulose filters getting wet?

So I'm going to switch over to cellulose filters i know you have to avoid getting them wet but if a filter gets wet is it completely ruined or is that jar just void and you need to let the filter dry out? I've put foil on jar lids it almost always keeps the filter dry but sometimes you'll still get a wet spot on a filter disk for some reason.

What are you switching from? I would stick with synthetic, you don't have to worry about them getting wet. You don't even need aluminum foil (but I use it anyway)

I had some synthetic ones i was using that got lost and I found a cheaper vendor for cellulose and I read that synthetic's pore size can increase over time cellulose will stay the same.

Don't use cellulose filters they suck compared to the synthetic ones. I wasted a lot of money on them myself and can't recommend them
I used them exclusively for about 6 months and 70% of them were growing mold by the time I ordered a new set of synthetic ones. Covering them with foil did not work, moisture still makes its way under.

I have been using the same CFD's for about 3 years or so. No issues. I would avoid using them under a plastic lid or anywhere they would be in prolonged contact with moisture. But cut up and siliconed to the lid works great.

How did you even manage to cut those up Pasty?
I remember trying a few and really mangled them
Now days I wouldn't cut a filter up though...
I think they work a lot better when used like intended.

Shears do the trick nicely. Need to be sharp to do it right.

I've seen people say this, but does this imply that you definitely had issues that you can only attribute to filter failures when cutting up the discs? This was tested?

Nearly all my filters are cut. I hate 2 piece lids and using the filter on the underside tends to cause other issues. Preference is all it comes down to IMO.

I always figured if you did a really good job scroring the lid and adhering the disc, it would function the same. Not sure if that's the primary factor or not though.

I have done numerous runs with both SFD and CFD. The SFD stand up to the moisture better but I have never had a filter fail with the CFD. To be honest I only ever had 2 filter fails with SFD either, over 1000's of runs. I say pick one or the other, they both rock. Better than tyvek or polyfil IMO (sorry cron). CFD are perhaps a tiny bit less forgiving of moisture.

My main problem with cutting filters is the adhesive...
Over many many washings the RTV silicone starts to peel off and it is a just a pain in the ass to add the step of checking the integrity of the seal on every lid before using it.
...Using an unadulterated filter disc keeps me from having to do that!
I do still have a couple of the Dialated's style of 'melted' plastic lids in circulation, those have held together since around the time he started that thread however long ago.

Guess so... I only like to use the 2 piece lids with rings that come with the jars & hate the plastic one piece kind!

Mine grew little powdery molds on the top right above the hole in the lid that were wicking through the filter and into the jar!
I'm pretty sure that Aloha uses the cellulose type of filters so maybe I just had a bad experience... either way they're off the table for me

I have had no issues with RTV peeling off, though I have read a lot of other people having that exact issue. Not sure what is the issue. Maybe different brands of RTV or something.
Regardless I always say if it's working its working. If someone is kicking ass with one piece filters and not cutting I wouldn't want them to change things up based on my experience.
Pirate I think Eaglesgift had the exact same issue with mold growing over the hole. I have no idea why it doesn't happen to me. It's something I watch close these days tho.

I think that the cellulose filters aren't intended to be cycled multiple times like the synthetic ones.
Can't be sure but for some reason I recall reading that somewhere

I cut my sfd's into several filters because they are "expensive" and also because they are more useful to me that way. I kept the filter whole for one run and always got grain in between the lid and the filter after shaking. Filter on top btw
