New Idea for Spawn
    #23566220 - 08/22/16 02:47 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

greeting travelers, i was in the old growth forest yesterday hunting Sasquatch and paul stamets and had a thought that i wanted to bounce off of you guys:

so i have noticed myc aggressively colonizing several kinds of tape lately (micropore tape, duct tape, masking tape), and it got me thinking

i wonder what the efficacy of tape spawn might be? for example, letting the myc colonize fabric and putting an adhesive on one side and wrapping it around scratched up areas on logs, trees, stumps, etc

alternatively, you could use an adhesive that can be colonized as well, or even nutrify some kind of adhesive breathable film

i noticed several logs that had sheets of myc growing in certain areas, and it made me think how much more surface area could be covered by a sheet or film or tape than plugs. of course it might only be suited for specialized applications, but nonetheless might constitute a novel approach to inoculating wood

anyways, just a thought

warm regards

very interesting idea. I wonder if trying it with a small log with those pieces you have there would be worth it?

something about the spawn plugs going into the log itself may give it an advantage over placing something on the surface of the log. none the less, worth a try.

i definitely would, but it is cube myc lol... i did put it on some moist cardboard though to see if it moves

im culturing several woodlovers right now and i will try with them for sure

a sealed-in plug would certainly have a few advantages over surface inoc, but what gave me the idea was seeing the way myc formed sheets over wood in the forest, gets lots of surface area that way, though it is exposed to the elements.

perhaps experiment with breathable film and also experiment with more solid backings like duct tape, which might help seal it in

yeah duct tape spawn would be the dowel and wax in one. that's a positive.

I hope you keep updating with your experiments!

i certainly will my friend :highfive1:

i have gotten back into practicing the hobby hardcore this summer  i have some really cool stuff in the works right now! for example: p. micro. (plastic digesting edible mushroom, how cool would it be to find a way to make it salt tolerant enough to digest some of those plastic islands in the pacific! its a fun thought at least), cordyceps m., reishi, lots of oysters, lions mane, shaggy mane, and lots more  its gonna be a busy/ fun summer!!

also working on some arduino/pc controlled grow rooms, a la azure

feels good to be back  sure miss RR though, hope he is hangin in there

:youthemandawg:

cool experiments! i have most of those going now, just not the p. micro (which i would love to get my hands on! very cool experiment hope the salt works) or shaggy manes.... well done sir!

have you posted anything on your grow room?

RR was a trailblazer, i watched his videos before i grew anything and would refer to them often during my straw log days  :sporedrop: .

This is good stuff dude.
And I feel the same thing about RR, and not just his advice is missing but culture wise just having one really big dog around keeps everyone more humble as a whole, or at least it seemed a bit different when you get to reading all of the old good threads.

I think you will need something thicker/more meaty/more nutritional to use as a good spawn material. I think I heard of inoculating twine or rope and then cutting a notch in logs and wrapping it around the notch. Or maybe I just made that up, I don't remember.

yeah i think rope spawn would be better.  it's pictured in mycelium running.  since hemp rope is thicker and plant based, obviously it's much preferable to tape.

Right on the money rooster. "Humble" is definitely the operative word. He set such a classy example, always kept everyone grounded.  Lately it's kind of a circle jerk , people biting the heads off and shitting down the neck of every noob who asks a question, whether to inflate their post count or their egos I don't know...

That's just it though, that's my point, you can make tape out of anything. All tape is is fabric/cloth/etc with an adhesive on one side. You could literally make tape out of sawdust, hemp rope, manure, literally anything. A nutrified fabric for instance. Just a thought
