Can I use spawn that has fruited?
    #23565069 - 08/22/16 05:20 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

So I've got some Shiitake spawn that has fruited in the bag.  I'm guessing I can still inoculate logs with it but I'm concerned the fruit bodies will be a site for contamination once outside the sterile bag.  Is that correct and I should remove and discard the fruit bodies or is it better to leave them in the spawn?

Remove what you can and use it.

hhmm intersting, I also have a jar like that sitting around, was thinking about the same question.

Gr0wer, would this reduce yield?

If your using it to inoculate hardwood logs then the difference would be negligible. The main issue will be getting the spawn out of the jar being all clumped up and solid.

What is the method to get the spawn from the jar?

In my experience it seems that Shiitake fruit bodies become a host to contamination once they are in a non-sterile environment because the Shiitake mycelium does not colonize the fruit bodies, leaving them open to colonization by something else.  Does this sound correct?

I'm about to do this with 2 BSOY2 bags - just waiting to get my flowhood built so I can spawn them to sterilized supplemented sawdust bags.

Good question thanks for asking it.
