Welcome to the other side, video cards are always a bitch, if your looking for performance then lay low on the storage. Everything is pricey, hope you find what ya like.

I'm moving over from consoles too. I was just buying parts for this $600 computer last night. It was actually about $550 after shopping around for good deals.

Solid sub 1k system. He did all the hard work for you. I'd get an Nvidia GPU personally but that's cause I'm biased as a motherfucker. I'd throw the extra ~200 into an SSD because SSDs are pretty much mandatory these days.

The price/performance for each tier from Nvidia/AMD are proportional for the most part. It comes down to what you can afford.
I've used cards from both makers. I'm currently using a 970 and have no complaints, but I've used an R9 280x and also have no complaints. Just know AMD draws more power and runs hotter. I'm with shroomism on the nvidia train, only because they run cooler.

What he said ^. Nvidia GPUs are far more efficient and run on less power and run cooler.... which in turn means they should last longer. I also fucking hate AMD drivers... but maybe they've improved in that dept in the past few years I dunno.

I got an nvidia 970 gtx in my big computer, and a 7800 radeon in the little one. AMD drivers, for windows, have come along far since last year.

Would hold off until the 1070 or 1080 is out. Maybe it already is.

You can easily make a solid build for under 1K. I prefer AMD and Nvidia. I've been building my own rigs for the last 10+ years and never had any issues. If you're still looking around you can PM me. I'll give you a hand setting up your build.

The NVIDIA 1060 is a much faster card (also considering it overclocks well) for the same price.
And yes, get a good SSD. Sooooo good
