Normal or yeast (or other)?
    #23563610 - 08/21/16 05:42 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

This is driving me crazy.  I recently inoculated 20 quart jars and 8 of them look like them might have a yeast contam.  The thing is, I made the 20 jars from 10 species, and I only see this on the oyster varieties.  Is this a characteristic of the family or yeast (or something else)?

Looks like myc, when in doubt put a few grains onto agar and check for yeast or bacteria.

Looks perfectly healthy to me, the dish is clean, the grain is hard to say. Why do you think there's yeast?

Are you growing those in light? Looks like oyster colonizing in light.

Thanks guys.  I thought it was yeast because I'm seeing something that looks like white specks in the lower left quadrant of the jar.  My first thought was hyphal knots, but I wasn't sure.  These all colonized in somewhat low level light.

100% dark colonizes faster and thicker, not so bad with low light.
If possible try 100% dark, or fully covered with a cloth.

I thought all mushrooms did best 12 on 12 off light and dark. Jar looks fine. Yeast will fermant any grain in contact nut is very slow. But myc will never colonized yeast infect areas. If it happened just flame a spoon around that area to remove when spawning to the sub.

No, not sure where you got that from. There's no light underground or inside a tree.
Light triggers a secondary growth phase, when reaching the substrate surface.

Light is for fruiting not for colonizing. See here, page 48.

Looks good and ready to spawn to me!! Keep us updated on its bulk colonization all the way through fruiting! Speaking of which- what kind of Fruiting Chamber are you running?
