Hey anth, that's more or less the same style we used in the lab. I'd check reviews on the model but would say it's legit. Just curious, why not build one to your own specs?

well i've been checking out the micron filters, i feel that where I am in Canada all the shipping charges and what not the price would end up around the same place....plus i'm crazy busy with a full time job and part time mushroom production...

Agreed...there is a lot of stuff out there and it's hard to know what's a solid product/investment, especially considering the cost. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and ordering one from FP. Let us know what you decide on.

Way better deal than the Series 1...You're looking at the larger filter, correct? Should be able to build it out way cheaper and get more filter area. I'm looking at either the 24"x24" or the 24"x36". I've a fan already so that helps a lot. Interested to hear what you settle on. I just think FP is gonna have a legit hepa so for me I'm paying for piece of mind.

Ant, I didn't see any specs for static pressure on that particular filter. You have to have pressure to calculate blower size.

Hey Quadman, what size is your filter and fan? The FP filters are all 1"SP. I'm gonna have to get a better fan. After looking at its specs it only pushes around 480 cfm free...bummer.

Got filter off eBay (Camfil Megalam)I have to measure I've forgot. Filter was $60 total. Fan from Surplus Center my favorite go to place for builds.Fan was $40 plus shipping it is a 24v double squirrel cage fan 3 speed. Spent another $40 for a heavy duty power supply. It looks identical to the one Grower has. Those filters were a steal was going to get a spare after thinking on it but he had sold all of them. Mine pushes 684 cfm free on high.

i think it depends on who is sending on whats being sent. both countries have import taxes on certain things but the market in the US is so mush bigger than here so things can be provided cheaper (200 million vs 30 million)....but if you see a decently priced hepa filter shipping from Canada let me know!

I'm currently working on building Gr0wer's flowhood- have the same HEPA and blower (The HEPA was only $130!!!) - just need the lumber and the weather to fab it! And honestly I wouldn't have it any other way- I want to be as hands on/DIY as I can with my mycology- gives me more (selfish) pride. Plus I want to engrave it with "TravelAgency" (with a space rocket connecting the top of the T and the cross point of the A. And probably also the Logo I'm working on for my hopeful future business venture.
Edited to add : if you want links to my/Gr0wer's HEPA and blower I can dig up some links for you.

Picked this up for $20 today. I pulled it all apart and cleaned it best I could. It was terribly greasy and dusty. Pretty sure the motor's cooked or close to. Anyway, I slapped some paint on it and hopefully can find a working motor at the same place. It's a 1/5 hp so should do fine for a larger filter. Fan issue is kinda solved.

Hey- if you can get a working blower that will match the cfm of your HEPA (crucial for laminar flow) for under a hundred - run with it! My blower was just under $300. Do you know the specifications on it?
By the by- I've been absent in the time that you joined this forum (my company filed for bankruptcy a second time) but I would love to extend you a welcoming. Thanks for pursuing a burgeoning science that seems inaccessible to most. You are now amongst MycoGiants- read as much as you can on this forum (just be sure to check the date it was written as even in my tenure on the site the science has progressed quite a bit) and don't be afraid to ask questions (unless it's "what is a greenhouse" - in which case use the search engine- but I see you already have a pretty good understanding of fungi). The people here are wonderful and are in a constant state of excitement for our fellow myconerds and for the advancements that we citizen scientists make.
If you'd like a wedge - check my journal- I'd love to send you one!
Once again a belated welcome to you hope you enjoy your stay as much as I do

Ant.. blower calc. I believe this the same size as mine. Filter measures 38" x 15" = 570" 570" ÷ 144"= 3.96 sq ft Stamets recommends 100 cu feet per minute per square foot for laminar flow So rounding off you need 400 feet per minute. Now when you get your filter the label show what static pressure is required. For example mine has static pressure of .4 " and if you use a prefilter (regular cheap furnace filter) you will add approximately .12 " so total pressure .52" So I needed a fan that could move at least 400 cu feet at .52" pressure You can run more I think I've read up to 150 feet and still maintain laminar flow a little more is good to allow for filter clogging . You can always cut back with speed controller or choke off intake.

I think i need 500cu feet per minute. and once i see the static pressure required on the filter i can figure out the exact blower specs i need.
your .4 and .12 for filters =.52 how did you calculate that?

Your filter has an extruded aluminum frame it's not all filter
why did you divide by 144"?
There are 144 square inches in 1 square foot 12"x 12" = 144

your .4 and .12 for filters =.52 how did you calculate that?
I used my filter as an example, as I said once you get your filter the static pressure should be on its label. You will use that number to calculate fan size
.12" is what I've read as kind of the standard for a prefilter (cheap furnace filter) Of course you can use a heavier prefilter , but it will be more pressure to pull air through it

Your welcome, it's not rocket science and your probably close with 500 feet. I do know your filter is thicker than mine ,so it will probably take more pressure. My pleasure.

its says on the top of the filter
365 - cfm 0.002 - %PEN .30 W.G

The 365 CFM is the test flow at .3" static pressure.
Your filter is 5 sq ft. You want 100 feet per minute of flow from each square foot of filter area, for a total of 500 CFM. That's the bare minimum. Increase this number by 20-50% to account for losses and inefficiencies. That's 600-750 CFM.
Your filter has a pressure rating as well as a flow rating. The test flow on the filter, 365 CFM @ .3", is roughly half the airflow you will be pumping through it, so because airflow and pressure are typically proportional in these filters, double the airflow, double the static pressure. So your filter will experience .6" of static pressure.
You'll want to add a prefilter to increase the longevity of your flow hood. These are typically .1". Your total static pressure from both filters is going to be .7"
IMO, you'd need a blower in the ballpark of 700 CFM @ .7".

whoa, thanks shroombasa,
what does the W.G stand for to become static pressure?

My pleasure.
It stands for 'water gauge'. I think it's based off of how they used to measure barometric pressure, so inches w.g. is just a unit.

water gauge =water column 1" water gauge =1/28 psi, since 1psi is 28" water gauge.

Replaced the old, fried 1/5hp motor with a new 1/3hp motor. No clue what it pushes...prolly a formula based on cage dimensions, rpms, etc., but should be sufficient for a larger filter...looking for a 2'x3'. Anyway, $20 for the fan, $10 on paint and $50 for the new motor. Runs like a champ! Gonna look cool sittin on top of the box as well. Here are the before and after:

nice blower Mycolorado! if there is a model number on the device somewhere you can search it online for its cfm. I got one from a friend and i'm having the same problem but it has its model name and number still on it so i was able to tell...or just do the flame test through the filter?

Hay anth, it was pretty old and all the info decals were long since gone. The cage is a good size...maybe 8-9" diameter and 10" long...it's a fairly large unit. I'll get it figured out. How's your build coming? Got pics?

Nice work! How deep is the plenum? Looks like a nice slim design. I think I've read 4:1 on depth to filter depth. Anyway, can't wait to hear how it works for you!
