no sterilize, no pasteurize sawdust tek
    #23562200 - 08/21/16 06:20 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I recently say this video on youtube -

he uses a lot of spawn but is able to skip the entire pasteurization process and since its only the pellets no need to sterilize. I think that would be beneficial for bulk bag preparation; I also imagine that you would save money on no heat vs more grain spawn.

what are people's thoughts here?

Varied contams.
Yields were fine. Same as pasteurized unsupplemented pellets.

I waz using 5 lb bags.
This method works, and if you have a shit ton of clean spawn, go for it.  I still do sometimes.  But supplemented pellets will produce more.

How much of a difference in yield are you noticing?  I'm not 100% sure how I am going to do my sterilizer in my operation, and I don't want to go the long PC route.

Would love to see any comparison results you may have, especially if you are talking 5 lb bags.

This tek is perfect except the grain spawn, thats the only issue here.
We can nearly stop using grains. Replaced by the WL Tek.

Create spawn from WBS to 100% plant fiber carbons.
Not once has it contaminated or failed to grow.

WL Tek paper or card as spawn.

I'm sorry I'm still newer to the mushroom world and don't understand a lot of the acronyms there.

I looked at the link in your signature, but it's a little gibberish to me at this point.

It's hard to explain how things work without some basic knowledge and experience.
You will need to understand how food and micro nutrition sources work.

----

Lets take rice as the first example.

Rice has all the micro nutrients we need plus some we do not.
Its food source, carbon source, is mostly a starch.

Nearly every organism on earth can consume starch, and therefore rice.
So it contaminates easily as you should well know.

----

Lets take wood as the second example.

Wood has all the micro nutrients we need although it could be better.
Its food source is oleoresin's and plant fiber, in general.

Very few organisms have the genetics to consume both plant fiber and wood resins.
These organisms are dubbed "Wood lovers" and are generally a mycelium.

----

The WL Tek is nutrition bland paper (99% plant fiber) + micro nutrients.

Oh right, sorry yes as anthiawe said wild bird seed.
Seeds are better for wood lovers, and stronger.

----

Its a known fact oysters grow amazingly on cotton seed and cotton seed amended substrates.
In general they love seeds, not grains. Seeds contain far more plant fiber.

Seeds also contain essential oils, and are nutritionally rich.
The shells also help with contamination resistance.

They do however contain starch's.
But are cheaper and better.

I haven't seen much at all on bird seed as a spawn starter, but I am interested in this definitely, especially to get my feet wet with my grow chamber.

Is there anywhere you may know that I can find some results or suggestions with WBS?  I've read you need to take out the sunflower seed, which doesn't seem terribly difficult with the right size strainer.  Is there any advantages besides cheaper oppose to grain?  I can sterilize this all in a giant pot correct doesnt need to be pressurized?

Wbs isnt hard to clean at all. Just soak it 24 hours. Drain it over a screen in a sink. Run the water over it for two mins. Air dry a hour. Load up jars and pc at 15 psi 2 hours.

WBS and grain should be no different, as tump said they need a soak.
This is to get past the shell and properly hydrate them.

You could even do a treated soak if you need to.
They stay whole unlike most grains.

other grains dont need to soak that long, and if you dont want to wait and clean it it sucks. BUT this WBS debates have been done before many times....people choose their grains for different reasons, WBS has its ups too.
