What is up with the horror stories of people on shrooms/psychedelics?

I think we've all heard stories about people wandering around the streets with no clothes on babbling to themselves, but what I'd like to know is, how did they get there? How does something like that happen? When I take heavy doses of shrooms, I confine myself to my room and know not to leave. I know the consequences of going in public in that state, probably even more-so while tripping. I'm off the deep end, but I'm still conscious that I'm tripping and the consequences of being caught in that state. I am always fearful of the authority figures looming outside my house and wary of showing myself to them.
Are these just inexperienced trippers, or can this happen to anyone?

It's never happened to me, but I've certainly been in deranged enough mindstates to understand and respect the fuck out of it. It can happen, and it does happen.
When your mind is gone enough, it's not clear where you are, or what you're supposed to be doing, or who you are, or where you're going, and in that kind of state it's very possible you might unknowingly accidentally wander outside. If you did and you were far enough gone, bad things would happen.
Maybe you accidentally wander outside and get really hot in the sun and unconsciously take off your clothes in the middle of the street. Maybe you're still hot so you "decide" to jump into the river. And just like that, it's over.
Then of course there is an even worse thing that can happen which is that some people on high doses have a violent reaction. They might break things, scream, hit people, cut themselves, kill animals, or attempt to kill people etc. etc. This seems to be a very small portion of the population that has this reaction, and it's a relatively rare reaction, but I've read enough horror stories on here to make me never want to do too high of doses with other people.

Farrrrr more people have violent reactions with alcohol than psychedelics but I know of one shroom freak out that is pretty bad from my circle. A friends first trip he was just so out of his mind he thought his buddy was Satan while they were driving... Friend began punching the driver do driver pulled over, guy tripping jumped out and tried kissing random onlookers. The driver tried to contain the tripping guy and the tripping guy got violent and started attacking again. Driver picked up dude tripping and dropped him accidentally on his fucking head and cracked his skull open. Dude got 3 staples in his skull and his account is fucking hilarious of what happened in his head.

Im not buying it, this isn't a shroom issue, most who trip plan it out and setting is critical to great trips, it is my belief that these are incidents of RC's and bath salts fake LSD trips people that are just escaping reality at the least expense, no thought or planning in the decision, they are likely young people that are dabbling with something they were given or mentally questionable people that are likely self medicating..I am sure there are cases of concert goers enroute home who may have misjudged the wear off and were trippin enroute but most likely the above situations are the case....

I agree, I don't see how these stories could happen with a mentally stable person. Even if you mis-dose and are in over your head, you're not going to be carefree running through the streets or anything crazy like that. You'd be scared and you'd want to find safety. At least that is has been my experience. When I was younger and did not have a good understanding of psychedelics or the psychedelic experience, I dosed heavy and went for a walk in my neighborhood. Things got scary and I got confused, but I knew one thing: I have to get home and inside. I felt like all eyes were on me and if they spoke to me, I would not be able to answer coherently. Maybe it's just my experience but I think the feeling of seeking safety is indicative of the drug. In heavier doses, taken in more responsible spaces, where I had gone into space and beyond (I was pinned to my bed and couldn't move) but with that said, I would never feel the need to be anywhere but safe isolation.

Its more than that. Some people just cant handle their shit even the most experienced vet isnt free from the potential of totally checking out. No joke a pretty experienced friend of mine came over once and wanted to trip HAAAARD so he took 5.75g of mush. 90 mins in dude CHECKED OUT. Eyes in back of head speaking in tongues then began to masturbate 2 handed for the next 4 hours while also pissing himself several times. He was GONE. And trust me we tried getting him to snap out of it. After the 4 hours he sat up asked for some clothes to borrow and a shower and apologized. The next day he rented a steam cleaner and cleaned up the place.
Turns out he was tripping about every single girl he never sealed the deal with.He apparently fucked all of them in his trip. He said it was like an infinite orgasm. He said it was the best trip of his life. Once we realized he was gone (I call it goin primal) we just threw a sheet over him and let him do his thing.
It is what it is. Heroic doses can make you completely lose touch with reality. Its scary which is why I personally dont go there often and if I do I def have a sitter and safe place squared away.

Good question. I think the no-clothes thing is because clothes can feel restricting, and if you're 'gone' enough to be babbling in the street you probably don't have any inhibitions about shedding your clothes.
I think inexperience can be a big factor - this was my first proper trip - Burned by Acid Rain – My one and only LSD trip where I ended up walking in the streets babbling to myself (with clothes on...although no shoes).
The dose in that trip wasn't particularly strong compared to the trips I do these days; the difference was just inexperience, and a lack of caution. My overall feeling was one of massive excitement, euphoria, and a lot of confusion. I wasn't paying any attention to the need to either stay indoors or at least "keep it together" in public. If anyone had been around they could have gently guided me home without any trouble.
With shroom trips over the past few years, I find that I will often become delusional at high doses, to the point of thinking I've become God or this is some kind of afterlife or matrix or whatever. If the trip takes over completely at the peak I'll just be lying or sat up in bed immobile, but most of the time I'm lucid (despite the massive delusions) and aware of the need to remain indoors and stay quiet.
I do agree with Rewindicus that
Quote:
even the most experienced vet isnt free from the potential of totally checking out
I'm usually OK at the kind of doses that bring on delusions and "ego-death" type trips, but I think if I increased the dose even more there would be a risk that at some point I wouldn't really know what I was doing; or what I thought I was doing had nothing in common with reality.
Also I think some tragic incidents may result from a "this is all a dream / unreal so it doesn't matter what I do" type mentality emerging during the trip. Again I think experience is helpful here, in fact more than a few times I've asked myself while I'm dreaming "Is this a trip? I better not do anything stupid..."
I think a lot of this kind of stuff can be avoided if you are sensible and experienced, but don't think "this can never happen to me" as that leads on to the kind of careless dosing which makes it more likely.......

Lol at some of the people in this thread outright denying psychedelics causing freakouts. Wtf? Anyone who says, "nah, good psychedelics don't make people freak out" must be new.
I've personally known two people who have jumped out of windows during bad trips, literally. I'm not making this shit up. I've seen countless people freak out before, it's definitely a well-known and well-documented effect that happens to people on psychedelics sometimes.

Same here I was in a car with a chick in the backseat tripping her tits off she fell asleep for a bit then woke up thinking she was in a coffin she was like a wildcat trying to get out if the car while driving in the highway. I also personally witnessed 2 different people jumping out/off the 2nd floor of houses miraculously without much injury.
Had to tie a girl to a chair with bike locks and jump ropes once because she thought she was a duck and would only break character to scream at everyone asking why they raped her mom and why they are N****rs. We had to gag her. There was nothing else we could do with this chick. After that night her name was unanimously changed to ducky or duck girl. And NO ONE would trip with her.
People can get weeeeeiiiiirrrrrrdddddddd on psychs. Even people you know super well.
I've got stories for days. And they are the reason why I don't really like tripping with strangers OR in large groups. Large meaning over like 3 other people. Especially if it's a heavy dose. There's just too many chances for people to lose their shit.

There's a couple "classic" stories that I read on the shroomery that I recall off hand:
One was in the shroomery news in which a guy (some kind of amateur wrestler I think?) took mushrooms and ended up killing and eating some of his friend.
There was the guy whose dad took LSD and became convinced that he was and had always been a serial killer but had never admitted it to himself, and under the effects of LSD tortured their cat to death.
There was a fatality involving a guy physically running into a lamp post so hard over and over again that he somehow managed to kill himself.
There was a guy who took DMT with an MAOI and then killed his room mate with a baseball bat thinking he was some kind of devil/demon.
There was the guy who took mushrooms with a group of people and ended up freaking the fuck out, breaking a mirror and cutting the shit out of himself, the other trippers locked themselves in an upstairs bedroom, and dude tried to bust down the door trying to kill them. They ended up calling the cops, and the poster in that case said he had never seen so much blood in his life when they emerged from the room (his whole house was coated in dude's blood from him breaking the mirror and intentionally cutting himself).
There are numerous fatalities in the news section involving people swimming in rivers, usually during the wrong time of year (winter etc).
There are quite a few videos on youtube of people being found outside that were technically "fine," but were so far gone that they were found by police and arrested while still spouting nonsense like "airplane castle sky yard" and other weird shit.
Then there's the guy who was naked and tripping outside. The police found him, but he somehow managed to escape while shouting insults to the police as he ran away naked. They never did catch him IIRC.
These are just the big ones that stuck in my mind that I can remember off hand. People freaking out on psychedelics is very real, and everyone should respect the fuck out of that and be aware of it. All you have to do is browse the trip reports and news section to find more stories about people freaking the fuck out on psychedelics. Maybe not to this extent, but it's very real and it does happen.

It's fucking placebo for the most part. Just like how people use alcohol as an excuse to act like a clown people will use mushrooms to act like they have no sense of what's going on even though mushrooms do the opposite of that.
It's because we've been told over and over again that these drugs will make you go crazy and that alone is enough to make people actually go crazy on them.

I've been exploring psychedelics longer then any of the "dangerous" psychedelics have been on the market (early 70's) and i have seen my share of freak-outs on LSD and occasionally on shrooms (total mindfuck and panic happens even to mentally stable people). I've even seen neurological effects looking like a stroke (one side of face drooping then tightening then the other side. it was freaky), Uncontrolable repetative movements. No psychedelic is safe from freak-out at higher dosages. As the saying goes: "Too much psychedelics YOU become the entertainment"

My roommates tripped while I was at another friends house for the night and they called me freaking out because a friend of theirs that ate shrooms for the first time was eating styrofoam plates, masturbating at them and trying to fuck their dog. One of my roommates was so freaked out at this dude freaking out that he ran bare foot into the woods and didn't come back until the next day covered in chigger and mosquito bites.

Ive chased one of my friends before because he was freaking out on LSD thinking the stars were alien ships descending to earth. He also became very violent when I tried to calm him down and thought I wasent real and tried to attack me with a rock.
Another time I saw a guy beat the living shit out of another guy for thinking he was making out with his girlfriend even tho she was beside buddy the whole time and the poor dude was just leaning against the wall by himself. Then the tripper continued to smash windows and threaten to kill anyone who gets in his way. He also broke all the windows in a car in the parkinglot whos was the owner ofthe house.
Also seen a guy freak out and was throwing cat litter/shit around and thinking he was making spaghetti then pissed on the couch.
Shit happens..It gets real pretty fucking quick and when you least expect it.

This thread is a funny ass thread. I never understood while some people can get great insight into their lives and what actions to take while others just have a complete mind scramble. One instance comes to mind where a 2 friends and I got some strong LSD on some wow. I was pretty well rounded with the effects though one of my friends was not (in reality I should not have been tripping with either of these kids). But anyways after each taking one dose about 2 hours into the trip the really un experienced kid decided to take another tab. I have never seen someone completely loose touch with reality the way this guy did. I remember my friend kept picking horrible scary ass rap songs to listen to and collectively as a group we all started to fade into immense fear. At one point about 4 hours in I remember the guy who took the extra tab looked at me with an expression of death, stood up from the couch, and in the most confused state ever took off his close. It may not sound too bad but the utter horror in his eyes expressed just how not ok he was. It seemed like the space we where in was a murder scene. I hate using the word but it was bad vibes man lol. That guy basically mentally checked out completely for the next 8 or so hours and I truly believed I was going to have to explain to his family why there son was a vegetable. Not to mention the same night while this guy was lost my other non stable friend decided to take a knife out and play with it. I asked him to put the knife down and he denied and responded with a strange scary reply like "why? Does it make you uncomfortable". I told him yes and that I felt as if I where to attempt to take the knife away from him we would animalistically react and possibly kill me. Can't make this shit up; But in that moment I truly understood how what could start as a fun night out could end in murder scene with 3 kids high on drugs. Scary stuff. I rarely trip now and when I go I usually do it by myself or with one close friend who I trust very well. But using pyschadelics really shouldn't be used just for kicks anyways.

I've had over 20 trips on shrooms and even more on acid before I was wandering around the street naked. It was the delusions and sheer intensity of the experience. It was like something else took over. I was no longer myself just a series of my brains functioning's.

A friend of mine in college ate a quarter of mushrooms and rode his bike naked through campus. He kept on taking shrooms after that and started believing that popular songs and such had hidden messages for him, then he started telling people that he was Jesus Christ and wound up going to stay in a mental hospital and dropping out of school, after which I lost touch with him. He still owes me $300.
