Is this a serious issue?
    #23561443 - 08/20/16 09:34 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So my bridgesii cutting was not cut very well and the top acts as a reservoir for rain, I'm concerned that this is going to be a serious problem?

it's rained quite a lot lately, the tip has definitely gotten a lot more black and it only showed roots a few weeks ago, it hasn't been able to dry all the way out in like a week so I'm thinking of unpotting it, but I don't want to damage the fresh new roots :frown:

I'd say letting rot set in is a lot worse then the roots needing to regrow.

That's a valid point.
Is there something I should do about the top being a bowl?
Would there be some way to slice it at an angle without removing that beautiful pup?

the soil mix is very well draining, made it specifically for rooting, has only coir perlite and limestone, not a whole lot of organic matter

I'd take a really sharp knife a slice the ribs at an angle and then keep it out of the rain for awhile. The pup looks big enough to have a good hold on the base cactus so cutting a notch out of the ribs shouldn't be to difficult.

Would you slice from the pup downward? I think the natural inclination of the cut is the opposite, with the downward part being where the pup is so I'll be chopping off a considerable amount of plant matter
I'll take better pictures of the geometry and try to get a better idea what I should do in the morning.

Looks more like a considerable amount of rot.

really you think that's rotting? I thought the black mold was a pretty typical thing for cuts to do,
I guess I'll do surgery in the morning :frown:
:okay:

Is it already squishy and slimy? If not I would try to cinnamon the evil rot out of it first!

Good luck!

I cut all my cacti at and angle to prevent that.  I would cut the pup off and cut that top at an angle.  The pup will grow slower on its own but better than it rotting off.
