Lophophora Questions

So a few months ago I got hold of a dozen L. Williamsii seeds, they arrived crushed which really gave me the shits so I bought another lot and they arrived safely.
Anyway since it's late winter going into spring here in oz I'm almost ready to start there journey, and have a few questions from the experienced cultivators; since some specific information can be difficult to obtain.
1: So I understand peyote creates pups; which is the ideal period to harvest specimens for consumption, since I'm not very keen on cutting apart the singular mother plants. So how does this process occur? Is it a natural process or can it be administered through cultivation?
2: And on the question on Indirect sunlight for seedlings, I was thinking about making a small shelter with a slightly transparent material to go over the Cactus on the veranda to avoid drying and burning from direct sunlight, cheers all

When you have plants old enough to eat i challenge you to harvest them.

And your idea of sheltered babies with diffuse light hitting them is spot on.

1. Unless you have caespitosa seeds it will be years before your plants throw out pups. I have Texanas that are 6 years old and don't have pups. Grafting usually speeds up this process though and they can throw out pups fairly quick.
2. For lophs a 30 to 40% shade cloth works pretty good. I have mine under a shelter that will let sun in from the sides they only receive direct son for about 4 hours a day and they are loving it

I'm still debating whether to graft them, don't want to stuff them up.
And I'm being patient with them, I'm more interested in growing them rather then eating them, foreseeing it's going to be a long time before I even get to think about consuming them.
And even though it would be most definitely helpful, is perlite necessary? I'm planning on using Propagation sand with a small amount of fine soil; would a handful of small pebbles be okay to create slight drainage? But I'm most likely going to use perlite.

With lophs you want more than slight drainage. You want fast drainage. Rocks perlite, limestone chips should make up at least 60% of your mix I have 75% in mine

You don't need that much to sprout your seeds though. Once you transplant them after adapting them to light and low humidity though

I can't believe you actually crush rock, that's serious dedication. If I couldn't find bags of limestone and sharp gravel I would probably just give up

Not all L. williamsii produce pups and you can´t necessarily expect yours to. Some produce them abundantly, others not at all - pic of a couple of mine.
The plant on the left is a mature offspring on the one on the right - so the tendency to produce pups may not even be genetic.

One of Mr. Fly's classic posts. Right up there with the "sun is free/best growlight/more lumens even on cloudy days" post. I must know do you type the whole thing out every time the topic comes up? You must feel like a broken educational record sometimes!
One day the people will learn Fly, don't give up!

When the same question is posed - yet again - the good people get the same answer - yet again.
