Asian Stores Have Great Cultivation Supplies * 1
    #23561077 - 08/20/16 07:45 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

hello friends, just wanted to share a tip that has been really handy for me lately:

Asian grocery stores /supermarkets have GREAT cultivation tools, some killer stuff i couldnt find anywhere else. a lot of this comes from the fact that lots of asian families have someone who cooks for the whole family, and they use super-sized kitchen utensils, and also many asian restaurants shop at these asian stores.

For example:

Giant stock pot with steamer insert, at least 51qt, and huge wooden spoon:

giant 2 level steamer, bottom is perfect for simmering huge amounts of grain, or can use the racks for pasteurization:

my favorite, HUGE collanders (and if you are really slick you might even bring home a nice asian girl to help you stir the grains  :

Telephone Brand Agar Agar powder (cheap and works great):

all this stuff is dirt cheap, and this is just scratching the surface. as common as materials like this are in SE Asia it certainly must come in handy for the mushroom cultivatiors who have such a long tradition in those areas. the Thai Royal Mushroom Project is simply amazing, i want one of their tshirts so bad

warm regards

And what is this thai royal mushroom project?

i have tested it beside high quality stuff from lab supply stores and i have seen no difference, i always use it in a pinch

And the thai Royal Mushroom Project (the other RMP, to any canadians out there, dont ask the royal mounted police for help growing mushrooms!) the thai king makes loans of all the materials involved in setting up mushroom farms in rural areas and teaching people how to grow long term. here is a link to a pdf on aloha's site mentioning it

And i cant recommend those colanders enough, truly enormous! they have cut my grain prep time dowh to nothing, i throw the steaming grains up in the air and the steam dries them almost instantly

So you brought home a random girl from the store to help you manufacture a schedule I substance? That was dumb.

The schedule I substance I'm talking about is psilocybin. Since you're posting in a forum specifically about psychedelic mushrooms (this isn't the edible and medicinal forum) then I'm assuming you're making drugs.

No matter how long you've known her, it's still not a good idea to tell anyone. You wouldn't be the first to get turned in by a partner and I've heard of it happening with relationships that lasted way longer than 10 years.

This is your entire life you're risking. Act like it.

I appreciate the concern, but she is way this side of trustworthy, we are basically common law married. My interests go a lot further than making drugs, I'm working on 10 medical/edible projects for each of the actives, and her whole family has cultivated mushrooms for 150 yrs, I'd be stupid not to learn from her

btw i snapped a shot of the isle that has the giant steamers at one of the markets:

all these things are much bigger than they look, 20-60+qt, and those giant steamers can be used for everything from simmering 3 gallons of grains or pasteurizing 3x what can fit in my AA 921

so i cannot stress enough how AWESOME asian stores are for buying cultivation supplies... im surprised they dont have spawn bottles and auto g2g machines!!

they have HUGE colanders, like large enough to fit an asian woman in (or like, a 50lb sack of grain), industrial mortar and pestles, agar agar, all kinds of commercial cooking stuff, strainers, pots big enough to fit TWO asian women in, any kind of propane accessory you could need, roaster ovens, all kinds of good stuff

Honestly, I've always just run in, grab the telephone packages and run out. Never really looked around before. I will definetly check it out the next time I re-up on agar

more excellent mush cult supplies available at asian stores:

my favorite 2 types of agar agar, and the cheapest:

other types of agar agar, some would be ok, others wouldnt. the main thing to check for is the sugar content (ideally you want 0g sugar). some of these products are sold as desert mixes, but the one we want is totally flavorless and sugarless:

giant mixing vessels, colanders big enough to fit 3 asian women in (really simplifies grain prep), huge pots (commercial size), and even a brick stove that you could use to run a PC with WOOD in the middle of a jungle!! kinda unreal, makes a lot of sense why mush cult is so much more advanced and more popular in the far east:

Damn I wish I had a Asian market like that.  Every one around me is about a 250 sq ft hole in the wall that smell like I fell into a large spice pot.  I feel like staying in there too long makes me guilty of some crime I didn't commit and the amount of dirt on the floor makes me need a shower after getting home.  They always have my agar though! :awedance:

The closest Asian market to me is a 45 min drive, which fucking sucks. Thankfully I'm a 3 min walk to two dollar stores which are huge and carry a tremendous amount of items that could be used in our hobby.

Sadly, they don't carry agar lol thankfully amazon prime hooked me up Friday. 5 ounces of agar will be here on Wednesday, along with an xacto and a new bulb for my giant lava lamp :scarybeat:

Also got some Peruvian torch seeds otw.
But dammit, I wish I was closer to an Asian store. I'd be there everyday just staring at the isles thinking of new ideas.

Damn bro that's a straight up Asian SUPERmarket over here we got some small Asian shops but tiny as shit with the isles way over crowded and dust covering everything on the shelves. Definitely not a pleasant experience lol. But like the previous poster said they always have my agar.
I think the shop owner is a lol rascist though he charges me double what the price is marked on the shelf lol.

lol thats funny  no one on the planet is more racist than asians, doesnt surprise me at all

i lived in areas without big asian stores before, and still found lots of great stuff. not all the cool shit in my pics, but there are lots of big stores like that that carry that kind of stuff  in my area

even the little stores have good shit though. next time you go, make a point to dig, and see if there is any merch they dont have on the shelves. a bunch of them have commercial cooking stuff they supply to restaurants

Actual truth I still have 6 box's that your talking about that are like 50% sugar. Just follow the cooking directions so no sugars are need to mix for myc to grow.

probably could, they will eat just about any sugar you throw at them

but fuck all that inconsistency/sloppiness

i like to make observations and notes comparing cultures, so the agar recipe needs to be 100% consistent

i run exactly the same every time. i switched it up a lot my first few thousand plates, but now consistency and being able to draw meaningful conclusions is my main priority

i make 1 L each run, and pour them super thin into 100-120 90mm plates

MEA: 1L h2o, 20g agar agar (telephone), 15g light malt extract

or

PDA: 1L h2o, potato infusion from 200g potatoes sliced and boiled for 20 mins and filtered, 20g agar agar

I really love how visible petris are but im so damn cheap i hate buying them i still have pastyplates that probably have over 1000 cycles on them lmao ok over a year old for sure ... but idk maybe ill start getting them in the near future ..

I have only been fucking around with my agar lately because i was trying to revive some cultures but they just were fucked .. i usually run 1000ml, 20 agar and 10 malt i can hardly keep up with transfers tho so i may bump it to 15

Keeping up with transfers and trying to figure out what I'm going to do with them all is troublesome for me at times. I really need to learn how to make a slant/get some sensible tubes for slants. Pretty sure if I just start sticking pasty plates in the fridge they're gonna dry out and I'll never be able to revive the culture I spent so much time and agar isolating.

I've got a feeling I'm gonna end up with more grain then I know what to do with.

I've never understood the need for 1000 dishes or even a 100 at one time unless your doing edibles farm style. I'd much rather have 10 master plates for to make 10 master Lc then expand that way. Asians are super racist in my area. you walk into there market dressed as a police officer one time and they tell you "leave round eyes" everyday

I usually make 5-10 plates at a time. My biggest problem now is I have 5 lgt x3 plates that are doing great, but idk if I should use them to knock up some LC for storage, or if I should just keep doing transfers. Got a feeling all my plates will dry out if I just store them as is.

Guess I'll be making more half pint WBS jars to test cultures again tonight.. Since the 5 plates I made last night are for 2 Aussie ms transfers and 3 for attempting to germinate some more atl7. Knew i should have made 10 plates and took 5 more lgt transfers.

Maybe I'll make some LC up tonight along with some half pint WBS jars to test these x3 lgt transfers.

I do that with a paint strainer draped over my colander. Works like a charm

you seem not to understand lots of things i do

people usually make master slants, never heard of a "master plate"

i mean duh you could take from a plate as needed till it dries out, but that is amateur compared to making a proper slant for long term storage or refreshing plates. most people who  know what they are doing keep slants of their meaningful cultures and draw from them as needed and refresh them every year or 2. you only have to take from it once to make as many mushrooms as you want, using g2g

and i guess you arent understanding that to end up with 10 "master plates" worth a damn, you would need to test hundreds-thousands of cultures and go through an assload of plates. good for you isnt necessarily the same thing as good compared to 1000 cultures

its all relative to what you are doing. 10 plates with a random culture and a "master" label on them might suit your goals just fine, but mine are much more involved. i am working with about 15 varieties of cubes, like 10 edibles, and 8 exotics, and lots of different projects with various respective goals.

sure, you dont need hundreds of plates to get a successful harvest. but some of us had our first successful harvest 15 years ago in middle school and set our sights much higher these days. like i said, its all relative to what you are trying to do and your commitment/discipline

To each his own

I do agree about the need for slants, I have been storing my cultures in 60 mm plates but its no longer practical for me to do so.  Its becoming increasingly hard to organize and make room for my cultures.

I may have to graduate to slants in the near future.  Although, I have used slants before and I always had a hard time getting a proper wedge from one.  I'm sure it just takes practice.

I have well over 100 pastyplates in rotations. Got like 10 or so projects going, including 3 clones, and a couple different species.

i never take a complete wedge, i always just scrape the surface with my loop and grab a tiny piece of tissue (no agar at all)

never had any trouble reviving anything that way

slants are great for storage, plates are great for cleanup, isolation, and comparing cultures/strains/strain groups

btw kinetic i got those prints today, i danced a little jig in the post office haha... thanks again buddy!!!!

Just went to the health food store and bought $20 worth of soft wheat berries, hard wheat berries, a 1lb container of whole wheat flour, 2 glass qt jars, agar-agar (shit is expensive!), and a little jar for the agar.

All in bulk prices :awehigh:

Health food stores are a shroomers dream :solidnod:

If you're cloning and isolating it's very easy to run through 100 plates. You take a clone. You have to transfer 2-3 times to see sectoring. Since you wanna be sure you get a good variety of what's in there, you take 4 wedges from the original plate. Right there is about 16 plates and you just got sectoring, no isolation yet. Then you're gonna have to transfer a bunch more times from each of those plates. It all goes up exponentially.

Yes, you can just use the clone with all the strains mixed in, but if you want real consistency you have to isolate.
