Trouble on ID of Hericium

Location: Monashee Range, British Columbia (PNW)
Habitat: Montane, Mixed Conifer/Deciduous Forest, found in end of dead log
Gills: no
Stem: not examined
Cap: Spine fungus, no cap
Spore print color: not available
Bruising: not investigated
Other information: "Mushroom Expert" says the only Hericium in NA is H. americanum. Trudell and Ammirati in "Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest" leans towards H. abietis. Do any of the experts have info that would lead to one conclusion over the other? Many thanks.

When they look like that, I call 'em Hericium coralloides. But you're on the west coast, so it could be H. abietis, if it was growing from douglas fir.
Not sure where ""Mushroom Expert" says the only Hericium in NA is H. americanum. "? There's "a key to the 4 north american hericium".... http://www.mushroomexpert.com/hericium.html

I was looking a the entry for H. americanum and had not looked at the base key. I used the individual species entries in the dropdown and they don't have an entry to H. abietis. I did notice the main key you linked for the genera does contain a link for it but it's on MycoWeb. Thanks for pointing this out. I'll dig further.
