Psilocybin in Alaska??
    #23558469 - 08/19/16 09:52 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Just moved to the interior of Alaska. Specifically in eagle right on the Yukon river. I'm in search for psilocybe mushrooms and have read many postings and how to identify but have not read of anybody finding any up here. I have several pictures and did a spore print on several mushrooms but am not confident enough in what I've seen to try them. So many look alike. Does anybody know of people finding these up here? Any help would be great

Could be wrong but I think they're only in tropical climates

haha really Niffla,
There are definitely some in Alaska but mostly on the coast from what I hear. Have heard a first hand account of massive amounts of P. Cyanescens at sea level mind you. Might be worth a trip out there.
Alder is a great habitat.
You should be looking for P. Cyanescens, P. baeocystis or P. Pelliculosa (trickier to ID). There is a possibility of others as well.

I think I found some of those weak ones that grow on well manacured lawns with the ring around the outside of the cap

michigan is a garbage state though. No cuture, no good drugs. fuck Michigan(from Muskegon)

Definitely some in Michigan too. The only place in North America I could see not having any psilocybin mushrooms at all is Nunavut or North West Territories. It really wouldn't surprise me though as Quebec is fucking cold too and has some good hunting.

Your welcome... Check out the hunting and identification forum.. I know there is a couple guys from Alaska who post. Definitely post anything you find and people (including experts) will help you positively ID it. Good place to learn about varieties and habitat as well.
Happy hunting

Took a look at your pictures.
The one with the purplish stem is likely Cortinarius vanduzerensis and then you have an Armillaria. Compare to Armillaria mellea. Also that last one looks like a Hypholoma to me, not sure which one.

No psilocybin there bud and possibly some toxicity.
Take care.

Psilocybe azurescens have been privately cultivated and also spawned. Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata has been reported. Keep in mind it takes someone publishing, sequencing and cataloging that area. I've seen azurescens fruit through ice in Oregon I don't see why a spawned patch in AK wouldn't. It's also had two reported finds of Psilocybe cyanescens, but I doubt those claims and would like to know more. Someone is actively spawning them, with a year and a half deep in the project and has had success. Look for the flying saucers around decaying trees, harbors, driftwood and stay out of the pines. I'd imagine they're fuckin huge up there with the lack of giant mycelial mats so they need larger fruits for sporulation. In the case of ovoids they're so ravenous I'm sure if they took off you'd be golden. Their spores are even shaped differently for propagation of the organism, and makes it stand out in the Psilocybe family as a unique feature. Azurescens grows around grasses that wick moisture down during the season like reeds and dune grass and stuff, ideally in a sandy area, on the outlying parts of the plant. Azures like to get away from the plants to wiggle their spores around.

Edit: And if you're out hunting and find moose shit, get a shovel and bucket and use it for cultivation of cubensis. It will blow hpoo and cow dung out of the water. The eensie weensie pine cones that's up there do well for the woodlovers but I forget what they're called. Generally they don't like oils and acidity so I guess if you wanted to know I'd go off that..

The Pub is more of a community forum. The best place you'd call home on this adventure would be Mush Hunting & Identification.

I asked a mod to move it if he or she sees fit and I'll get you some more information in the meantime.

What you can do is make a separate identification thread. After you type in the Subject, there's a drop down box for mushroom identification. If you click that and choose "ID request", it'll spit out a template that is typically needed for identifying. Someone here probably knows it by sight but you could find it useful down the road. Don't forget to make a new thread for an ID request, but if you come home with like 8 different specimens then throw them together with required information and you should be golden.

There are also "Trusted Identifier" folks who are mycologists or damn good at what they do so if you're unsure on a finding make sure that white tag is underneath their registration date. You'll see it around I'm sure. They are the go to people here.

A Psathyrella of some sort is likely pictured above with the purplish print. All look to be the same species. Not sure which one, there are around 400. :cookiemonster:
PS.. also adden and op.. the cyans I heard of were picked growing wild on islands in the extreme south near BC.

No kidding? Mind posting some active pics if you have them? I know I can't be the only one who saves everything..

I'll have to find out what area of AK the cyan spawn was in. It's the dude(tte) who was running azure spawn. Had a flush one season and they didn't come back in that spot.. so they made another for this next season. I'll do some digging around.

My uncle spent the 60s and 70s in Seattle. In the early 80s he moved and said the mushrooms he got in AK were 99% of the time cubensis, but some of his buddies would get the mushrooms he picked in Seattle, but only at certain times of the year and they were almost always fresh and everyone ate them in group settings. For whatever that's worth I dunno.

I am fairly sure they are a Psathyrella and 100% sure they are not psilocybe.
And adden, I haven't been to much for taking pictures lately sadly. I lost a computer a few years ago and run off a phone. I usually only pick libs a couple times a year for a strong Fall trip or two. Ran into cyans and beaos a few times too by fluke. Will take some lib and edible pics next month if it ever rains.

Wyoming also has active species, though only a few. Next time you'd like a trustworthy opinion on the availability of active species within a given area, consult this guide. It may not include every area or every species, but it will give you a good idea of what to expect.

My guess is ovoids do not exist there at least outside of backyard cultivation anyway.  They have the disadvantage that they don't do much growing when it gets cold. Ps cyanescens do not mind cold at all.  Not sure if those exist there either.  But they can be cultivated easily enough.

Tiny cones sound like hemlock.

Those spore prints are pretty spot on.  I think they might be a Psathyrella species though.  Are the stems really brittle and snappy?

The stems were brittle 24 hours after picking.

Replying to share first hand Alaskan info - and a crazy story!

I originally found this post after taking a walk near Skagway Alaska and noticing the amanita growing everywhere. I was curious if any psilocybes grew up here and found this post!

I read through the thread and basically derived that I should be looking for cyanescens. Doubtful I’d find anything, I wandered through the woods and I shit you not I found this patch within 10 minutes of reading the article.

Skagway is located at sea level along the taiya inlet about 90 miles north of Juneau so they must be pretty widespread throughout southeast.

Pretty crazy stuff! Was skeptical that I had actually found them so I did a bunch of research and even found another patch where I collected for spore prints and etc.

Posting to say, they’re definitely out there! Take it from an old skagwegian forager.

Posting to say, they’re definitely out there! Take it from an old skagwegian forager.

These are not Psilocybe cyanescens. Please post some pictures of gills and stem. I think Cortinarius is not unlikely.

You should by no means eat any of these.

Wowza that was a real learning experience, found this patch a week ago and harvested thinking it was cyanescens. Was skeptical cause they didn’t bruise blue so I figured it could be Galerina and didn’t wanna mess with it. Then today I found a patch of the same type of mushroom but these ones bruised a vague blue

I got all excited thinking those must’ve been cyanescens I first found and responded to this thread before being sure of what I had.

Thanks to renegademycologist I was able to determine they were Cortinarius Myxacium. But unfortunately not before I embarrassed myself here! Still not sure why they bruised blue, got my hopes up lol. Guess I’ll keep foraging

The blue - or, purple, rather - is not bruising, it is inherent.
Might be C. collinitus.
