Gymnopilus junonius?
    #23557222 - 08/19/16 03:27 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I must preface this by apologizing for the lack of some pieces of information here- I am aware that for a conclusive ID to be given, more is needed than what I have here. I however, being in a national park in an area where straying from the path or picking anything is forbidden, was unable to get shots of the gills or spore print or better photos than I have (to take these I had to bend over a railing and lean down).
Habitat:
On decaying wood (probably conifer given it was in a primarily redwood forest) in Northern California.
Gills:
Rust, attached, mostly obscured by a partial veil. I was unable to get a photo.
Stem:
Orange-yellow, lined, without any change in thickness throughout its length (one of the features (along with the relative slenderness of them stipe) that makes me consider g. Junonius over g. Ventricosus despite It's being found on coniferous wood (ventricosus grows only on conifers, while Junonius is found on both hardwoods and conifers)).
Cap:
It seemed early on in development, ~2 inches, finely scaly, mostly yellow with brown-red shades interspersed.

Spore print color:
This is probably the biggest omission- it couldn't be obtained for the reasons mentioned above.

Bruising:
nothing noticeable, however now areas were damaged in any way and it wasn't picked so I won't say there was conclusively no potential for bruising.

Thanks for any help I might receive and I apologize for the poor pictures:

Fair enough. Gymnopilus junonius is very plausible. Surely you can turn over a mushroom to look at the gills, but I salute your goodness.

Thanks for the help! Do you (or anyone willing to take the time) know what else they could be?
