Barkless mushroom log coated with polyurethane
    #23557062 - 08/19/16 02:20 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hi Everyone,

I found a interesting piece of wood while out walking the other day and decided that I would try to grow some shiitake mushrooms on it. Problem is that it has no bark. Not to be deterred, I decided to coat about 90% of it with polyurethane. The hope is that it will serve to protect the mycelium just like real bark would.

I left about 10% uncoated so that I can soak the log periodically and get moisture to the interior. Or atleast that is the idea.

The question I have is this? Does anyone know if the polyurethane will kill / damage the mycelium and more importantly is there any chance the resulting mushrooms might be contaminated with chemicals from the polyurethane?

Has anyone tried something like this?

Thanks in advance for your input!

I believe the recommendation for logs is fresh cut then let sit a couple of weeks before inoculation. Old wood is probably contaminated, other molds or bacteria.

Very true, however I boiled the piece of wood for 10 minutes or so in the hopes of killing anything living on it.
