drying shrooms, I know "another one"...
    #23556329 - 08/19/16 09:47 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, I have been reading old threads. I even tried to search!

I'm not looking for the "best or quickest" way.

I notice most people use a fan to start off the drying process...what I'm wondering is, is that necessary??

Could I not just throw some desiccant in a container. (thinking pyrex dish).. with some kind of grill/raised space, ..the shrooms on the grill, lid on and taped to be sealed?
Would that eventually dry it out? how many days do you think it would take? (so I don't bother opening it early or anything. )

We're eventually going to get a dehydrator but we don't have the space for more appliances. (hence not wanting to use a fan either. )

so I'm really hoping that drying them out with the moisture absorber will work. (even if I have to change it with each "flush"....it'd still be cheaper than buying truffles. Which is why we're looking.)

Thanks for any help. How think of a desiccant layer would you suggest?

EDIT: OK, so that's a no. and I'll be ordering a dehydrator. (also, to the people who skim posts, you need to spend a little more time reading >.> ...)

Desiccant alone will not work. They will never become fully dry.

If space is the issue, my cheap dehydrator easily fits under my bed.

Don't use those packets for drying that sucks.

Fan drying is fine, if I would ever use a fan it would be on fruits before going on to the dehydrator when the dehydrator is packed full.

The real answer is just get a dehydrator. If you seriously cannot afford $30 then check a thrift store.

It's worth doing right, it's how you preserve your harvest. You don't make a nice meal then let it sit out, well you might but you won't enjoy eating it later.

Think of them like any other food. The quality depends on the preservation.

If you place fresh mushrooms in a desiccant chamber they will take a week to dry and will turn almost black from bruising and end up looking like cat turds. You will have a good chance of them just molding also.

A good hobo style dehydrator is simply a box fan with a space heater behind it. Make a frame and staple window screen to it. Use 4 bricks or jars or whatever to elevate the frame off the ground in front of the fan. You can stack a couple of frames with a little spacer between them too.

You can also use a oven if your going to be tedious  but I'll throw em in a brown paper bag day not completely sealed for about a day then into the oven for a couple of hours if you really can't get a dehydrator

dehydrators cost more than that here. Because they have to be posted into the country, no store seems to sell them ><
But cost isn't really the issue.
The flat we live in has a total of 6 sockets, and they seem power stretched as it is :O
2 of them in the most useless place ever.
I was hoping to get away from having to plug in tbh. But, if I'm going to have to, a dehydrator would clearly be the quicker option than a fan.

Anyway, explains why every thread talks about using a fan before desiccant. Thanks for the quick responses!

PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series

Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

Well, I searched the threads.

That says several days with desiccant... but the threads I came across, seemed that would only be the case, if you used fan first.
So which is it?

Yeah, my bad. I reviewed that thread after I posted. I shouldn't have posted that, I apologize.
Just ignore that.

Dehydrator is the best method. A desiccant is meant to KEEP your shrooms dry, not dry them.

You can use a fan if you choose, it'll just take longer. You still want them completely dry before you put them into a bag with a desiccant though.

There was one post that answered all of this and I thought it was the link I posted, but that wasn't it  I don't know where that post is anymore.

Jayz, I see no one reads my full post.

The problem isn't the cost of a dehydrator lol. It was trying to avoid having to plug in another appliances, to the few and over stretch sockets in a shitty flat.

I also, don't like buying from ebay or amazon due to past hassle with getting warranty covered.
I do have a site in mind, but it's more expensive than 30$ for a dehydrator, because of postage cost, that's all I said. (but again, that was never the issue! )
I was just being hopeful, but I now that I know that won't work, I'll be investing in a dehydrator..

Now to edit my first post.

I'll be getting a dehydrator and the desiccant for keeping.

I thought that might be the case, about it, just for keeping, I was being hopeful.

I never mentioned cost at all? And yes if your serious about this hobby its worth doing it right from the start you'll waste more shrooms than you dry with out a dehydrator
Good move :highfive:
