using spores over and over again?
    #2355579 - 02/19/04 06:00 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering if you could actually use spores over and over again. What i mean by this is using one generation of mushrooms's pores to grow another generation, and then using those spores to make another gerneration, and then using those spores to make yet another generation...etc.
Maybe an inbreeding effect could occur?

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure mushrooms have been doing that for millennia.
You'd be fine doing that.  The only harmful effects of inbreeding (besides social, and legal conflicts) is a lack in genetic diversity which doesn't allow an species to adapt well to different environments.  Since the environments they will be introduced to in this occasion are going to be controlled to be the same they will be fine.  The control of genes is something we look for.  That's where all these strains come from.  Well that was written with a lot of fallacies but you get the idea

Hmm...not quite. Multisexual would be more the right term.

that's because weed is a plant. mushrooms are not.

If you are reffering to taking prints from each successive generation of mush that you grow .... the answer is yes you can and no worry about "inbreeding" , in fact after a period of time you will actually come up with a strain that is favorable to the particular growing conditions you are able to provide .
If you are refffering to using the same print again to start again , the answer again is yes , but after time the spores start to dry out and become a little more resistant to germinate , a print can be easily used in some cases 2 years down the road from when it was actually printed , some folks will say longer , some will say less .
Older prints can be rehydrated by letting then sit in some sterile water for 24 hours and then used to do injection inoccs , this sometimes revives then a bit and gives you a better chance for a successful germenation .
When doing agar cultures the fresher the print the better germination you get IMHO .
Good Luck
