I'm invited to a BBQ this weekend. Best/worst things to bring?

Already asked what to bring, e.g. any particular meats, beer, etc. Their response was simply, "whatever you want." So I don't know who's cooking or bringing what. What should I bring? What should I not bring?

Serious answer: Take a big container of pasta salad. That stuff is the shit and fools never remember to pick any up. I can't enjoy the whole burgers/hot dogs kinda vibe without a healthy dose of pasta salad. And it's easy as hell, just go to a grocery store deli.

Potato Salad goes great with pulled pork, or any barbque slathered meat really. Macncheeze Beer Pasta salad Deserts such as cookies are always a hit. If I were invited to a grill out or barbque, these are the types of things I would bring. Chips are very acceptable if you're on a time crunch, can't cook, or are short on cash.

You can't go wrong with a few T bone steaks of at least an inch thickness, a great tasting but not too wild hotsauce and a bottle of Bacardi, a decent whiskey or case of good beer depending on the company.
as said before, DON'T BE THE CHEAPO OF THE EVENT
People will judge you on whether you go long or short on contributing to the event and that opens and closes social doors in the future. Don't be napkin boy cause you'll feel embarrassed through the whole thing and it will echo in the minds of the paticipants for years to come that you shorted them.
Go long.

Just contact a few people who are going and ask/coordinate with them as to whom is bringing what.
Bring ground beef or preformed beef patties for burgers, some kind of bratwurst or bangers, burger and bratwurst buns, macaroni, potato, or fruit salads. Baked bean and coleslaw. Chips, dips, salsa. Cookies, pie, ice cream bars/popsicles. Beer if possible. Water. Crystal Pepsi.

Bring ground beef or preformed beef patties for burgers, some kind of bratwurst or bangers, burger and bratwurst buns, macaroni, potato, or fruit salads. Baked bean and coleslaw. Chips, dips, salsa. Cookies, pie, ice cream bars/popsicles. Beer if possible. Water. Crystal Pepsi.

Bring one individual packet of barbecue sauce and place it next to the other condiments.

Also be sure to leave a sticky note on it with your name on it, that way you can come back and claim what's rightfully yours when it's time to eat.

I'd bring a side that I made. Maybe like a cold quinoa salad, or some home-made salsa, some smoked salmon or prosciutto wraps, something like that. It all depends how many people you are intending to feed.
A roll like this stuffed with asparagus or basil and some type of cheese, requires no cooking experience and is easy to make. Only thing is it might not fit your budget depending on how many people you need to feed. But you don't have to bring large portions, because this is just kind of an appetizer. And you can make these same rolls with prosciutto and other things too. Bring some lemon and olive oil, and that's all you need.

It's not really a salad, it's mostly quinoa with maybe a little bit of kale or cilantro, tomatoes, and avocado inside. Toss it with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar all together, and you can serve it cold. Actually, I think it's better cold than it is hot. It's a good side alternative to macaroni salad or potato salad.
Looks kind of like this.

Quinoa salad is bomb. I don't make that type of dish often, but I'll always eat it if it's available. Healthy and makes you feel great after eating it. And it's not like it tastes bad or something.

I actually just made some prosciutto wraps for breakfast the other day. I prefer to use good-quality shaved manchego or parmesan from Whole Foods, but all I had was havarti, so I had to use that.
It's not really "barbecue food," but it's a good way to eat salad with your fingers, which makes it perfect for a BBQ environment.

Honestly, I always used to order quinoa salad at places, until I realized just how easy it is to make. Now I buy tricolor quinoa in bulk ($30 for 10lbs purchased wholesale online), and make enough quinoa salad at a time to last me for at least 1 week. And restaurants and supermarkets upcharge prepared quinoa so much, even grocery stores charge $10 for maybe 2 or 3 servings of it.

I recommended the smoked salmon and prosciutto because I probably eat that dish at least once a week, and it's a good dish to make for somebody who has no cooking experience. (I don't know if OP does or not)

Not salmon and ham together. You either make the salmon rolls, or the prosciutto rolls. Americans tend to be more wary of eating fish though, so I'd prefer to do it with prosciutto at a BBQ.

That quinoa dish looked good to me. I'd crush it at a BBQ.

Yeah but if you remove the frill and stick it in your mouth you can 'un-fag' it pretty quick...

You called my breakfast faggy cause I used prosciutto to make something, but it turns out you carry prosciutto in the house. Clearly it's not because of your son, since he hates it.

I dont carry prosciutto, my kids saw it, imagined it as being large strips of bacon and wanted to try it, we opened the package on the way to the car and my son said "this tastes like cat food". my daughter said "holy shit, this is gross" and they tried to get me to eat some and I told them that I wont eat any until I can be certain that it doesnt kill them
I cant believe how bigoted you liberals are, I mean here I am allowing my children to express their curiosity about the homosex/hipsterfag lifestyle and you guys are berating me for being an open minded individual and accepting the choices of my children

LMFAOOO you had them try it out first to save yourself ahahahahha
Prosciutto isn't that good if you eat it just by itself. No wonder your kids didn't like it.

Never tried cat food, but I imagine it tastes similar to canned tuna.
My dog had these salmon chips that somebody got me as a gift. At $17 a bag, I would have never bought it myself. This bag of snacks was more expensive than human food snacks!
But apparently it was 100% WILD-CAUGHT salmon and even all the ingredients used were organic. I tried one and they were soooo damn good!!!! Honestly, I ate most of them myself
It's late and none of my avocados are ripe yet. So I'm eating tortilla chips dipped in natto. Pris' kids would think that stuff tastes like sewer shit.

Reminds me of when my cousin visited one summer when i was little. My mom made tuna sandwiches and he says "isn't that cat food?"

OH GOD, that reminds me of this lady I saw on Extreme Cheapskates. In order to stretch our her tuna sandwiches more, she'd combine it with canned cat food. She would make cat food and tuna sandwiches and feed them to her husband who had no idea.
The odd thing is, I don't think cat food is really any cheaper than canned tuna. Tuna is what, 75 cents per can? Cat food can be 50 cents to 99 cents? I don't see the point in stretching out tuna with cat food...

I have a friend who is one of the last shepherds in Holland. He is epic. For a barbecue he once brought one of his lambs, freshly slaughtered and processed, and some hardcore equipment like a charcoal trough and rotor to prepare it in the backyard.
I so regretted not having been able to attend
