Burke says to bring tweezers....ya just never know when you're gonna need em.
Seriously, though....a watermellon is a great idea...just make sure you bring a knife to cut it up....Ice, paper plates, plastic utensils...or a desert...can't go wrong.

Just contact a few people who are going and ask/coordinate with them as to whom is bringing what.
Bring ground beef or preformed beef patties for burgers, some kind of bratwurst or bangers, burger and bratwurst buns, macaroni, potato, or fruit salads. Baked bean and coleslaw. Chips, dips, salsa. Cookies, pie, ice cream bars/popsicles. Beer if possible. Water. Crystal Pepsi.

Bring one individual packet of barbecue sauce and place it next to the other condiments.

Also be sure to leave a sticky note on it with your name on it, that way you can come back and claim what's rightfully yours when it's time to eat.

I'd bring a side that I made. Maybe like a cold quinoa salad, or some home-made salsa, some smoked salmon or prosciutto wraps, something like that. It all depends how many people you are intending to feed.
A roll like this stuffed with asparagus or basil and some type of cheese, requires no cooking experience and is easy to make. Only thing is it might not fit your budget depending on how many people you need to feed. But you don't have to bring large portions, because this is just kind of an appetizer. And you can make these same rolls with prosciutto and other things too. Bring some lemon and olive oil, and that's all you need.

It's not really a salad, it's mostly quinoa with maybe a little bit of kale or cilantro, tomatoes, and avocado inside. Toss it with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar all together, and you can serve it cold. Actually, I think it's better cold than it is hot. It's a good side alternative to macaroni salad or potato salad.
Looks kind of like this.

Quinoa salad is bomb. I don't make that type of dish often, but I'll always eat it if it's available. Healthy and makes you feel great after eating it. And it's not like it tastes bad or something.

I actually just made some prosciutto wraps for breakfast the other day. I prefer to use good-quality shaved manchego or parmesan from Whole Foods, but all I had was havarti, so I had to use that.
It's not really "barbecue food," but it's a good way to eat salad with your fingers, which makes it perfect for a BBQ environment.

Honestly, I always used to order quinoa salad at places, until I realized just how easy it is to make. Now I buy tricolor quinoa in bulk ($30 for 10lbs purchased wholesale online), and make enough quinoa salad at a time to last me for at least 1 week. And restaurants and supermarkets upcharge prepared quinoa so much, even grocery stores charge $10 for maybe 2 or 3 servings of it.

truth of the matter is if you're asking a bunch of people on a shroom website about what you need to bring to a bbq, you're most likely over thinking it and you're going to end up bringing the most awkward dish known to mankind

LOL. If he ended up taking just half the advice in this thread though, it would become the most epic BBQ known to mankind.
