WASHINGTON — The Justice Department will end its use of private prisons, declaring that the facilities are less safe and "compare poorly'' with government-run institutions in the country's largest prison system.
Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, in a Thursday memo to the federal Bureau of Prisons, directed officials to start the process of reducing and "ultimately ending'' the government's reliance on private lock-ups that house nearly 30,000 of the 195,000 inmates in custody.
"They simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs and resources,'' Yates wrote. "They do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the department's Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security.''
Earlier this month, a review by the inspector general found that incidents involving inmate discipline, the recovery of contraband, including cell phones and the frequency of facility lockdowns were more common in contract prisons than in government-run facilities.
"For example, the contract prisons confiscated eight times as many contraband cell phones on average as the BOP institutions,'' the inspector general reported. "Contract prisons also had highter rates of assaults, both by inmates on other inmates and by inmates on staff.''

This is actually pretty huge. GEO and CXW (Corrections corp of america) stock down ~40% ATM. Getting absolute thrashed. I've always thought one of the most evil shits on the planet were these people. Making money off of creating criminals (lobbying for strict laws and sentencing, policies that led to targeting people less able to legally defend themselves) and throwing them in cages. All for their bottom line. They made a profitable industry out of ruining peoples lives.

Definitely a good thing...making money from the having the most prisoners possible sickens me....corruption abounds in enough places let alone adding places like these prisons to the world...

And they say crime doesn't pay, guess it does if you run a private prison.
Private prisons suck all around. Pretty sure the general consensus here will be that private prison owners and executives should each have to spend a day in their man made hell.
Wonder how much they would enjoy big bubba...

dont get to excited yet, the private prison industry is another to big to fail business, they will convert to just immigration/minors and force the GOVTs hand, the amount of US companies that relocated to low income countries like Mexico have been slowly coming back to the US because they use inmate employment at $1 or less per hr(cheaper than mexican sweatshop labor and get to use the term made in the USA) and the money/paycheck goes to court costs, cost of supervision, legal fees, child support, financial "credit"judgements, medical care while incarcerated, medical bills to hospitals throughout your life and the cost of feeding/housing/transportation to work while incarcerated so the "slave labor" trade will continue one way or another, companies like HP/COMPAC building computers and telephone customer svc calls for hundreds of US companies go through prisons now as slave labor, there are many major US companies using inmate labor/slave labor, they cannot call in sick, dont have family issues and if they refuse to work they go to solitary confinement, lose gain days for behavior issues "work related" Traded by prisons based on abilties so older inmates may do phone work while younger healthy nonviolent "drug offenders, there favorite" will do physical/technical jobs, worse than that is the fact that because they get paid the W2 forms show them as employed, so they count as numbers in US 4.5% unemployment rate which by the way is really about 20-25% based on real math/gov assistance/food stamp figures but that doesn't help the Elite sell the fake dream we are suppose to be hoping for, after all the american dream has become a horrific fu-kin nightmare.... They will keep locking us up and whoring us out as cheap labor, they will just adjust the rates the Gov pays per inmate and type of inmate due to the profits being made elsewhere...

this is just for federal prisons look at the numbers 195,000 total... that's not going to really hurt GEO and CXW... they'll just get in on more state run facilities

I don't really see how someone can be harmless, be tried by "the people," and pay a debt to society, of arbitrary duration. Call me literal. Or, is it objective morality.
Whether the prison is run on private terms, or by private parties, there will be stakeholders, who accept the risk, and there will be profit motives, to cage a person at gunpoint.
Prison labor works the farm, and, in recent stories, builds military components, such as helmets. While we complain about Chinese abuses of political dissidents, we have our own b2b's, where you can buy these slave goods, at wholesale.

Lets not forget the HP contract building computers or the customer svc call centers all being run from prisons, There is a reason OITNB has touched this subject, the prison is now privately owned and started making womens underwear, they were making a point... It isnt just the old license plate and road work labor, they are doing legitimate work that citizens would be doing at minimum wage or more,(how many could come off welfare doing these jobs) but to get that labor for less than $1 an hr with no sick days/family issues/employee strikes and no benefits yet the gov counts them in unemployment figures (employed) due to tax forms in the ss# even though all the money goes to feeding/housing/transportation/court cost/cost of supervision/medical/previous judgements including medical-student loans-evictions judgements and of course back child support, if there is money left after all that and any back taxes are paid, then youll get a few bucks when finally free...sounds like slavery to me, there is a reason they go after low level drug users, they are non violent and usually in the perfect age/minimal health expenses while jailed(to work) the violent offenders/rape-assault(are non compliant/carry risks) and the older age groups (health costs-limited technical skills"computers technology" are less profitable, so target the young nonviolent drug users and immigrants (gov pays more for there stays/work harder/less medical needs)

never looked at it that way
buttt
having been to prison, the Private ones were alot safer and more productive than the state-run facilities.
I've heard lots of similar cases too.
This is one case where i think the free market got it right. unless i'm using that term incorrectly.
