Going homeless for a month. Tips?
    #23552345 - 08/18/16 06:22 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I'm going to a town 5 hours away and I was originally just going to sleep in the truck with my ride but my ride bailed on me so now I'll be heading to that city and when I get there I won't have a place to stay SO I'm hitting the streets for a month.

The main concerns I have are showers, not getting my stuff robbed, and finding a place to sleep.

For the showers and not getting my stuff robbed, I think I'm going to get the cheapest membership I can at Planet Fitness so I can use their showers and lockers 24/7.

Finding a place to sleep seems like it'll be a bit trickier. Rather than hitting an alleyway or somewhere under a bridge, I'm thinking about climbing a tree and just falling asleep there. Any idea if that's possible? Never really slept in a tree before.

Also, what should I pack? I know I'll need to pack light but how many pairs of each clothing should I take? Doesn't get too cold around here and the place I'm going has a lot of homeless people already.

--------------------
How to get started in bulk:
Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker
BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

Unless your going to a shelter, my advice is dont hang around under a bridge with a bunch of crazy junkies.

For sleep, i use to sleep in a library at a local university during the day, they even had showers there.

Sounds like you have money tho for a membership, i was completely broke in the center of Alaska and winter was approaching rapidly.

Pack plenty of water and nonperishables, charge your phone in outlets outside gas stations or maybe a shitty waffle house

Going homeless near my town or going homeless in that city doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me except the city I'm going to has more to offer me

Getting there and back isn't the problem, the problem lies in what I'm going to do when I get there.

No.. Just no.. Unless you don't like working ..  One day I was busting my ass with a chainsaw at work when the boss arrived with this homeless kid he just picked up on the side of the road... The kid had a secured job but decided to wok the day and not return the day after.... Some people prefer to be homeless than work , I think that is what usually happens here.....  Op if you are willing to bust your ass just make a sign saying you are looking for work.... Eventually you will find someone who will get u work , feed you and even shelter you..... I see it all the fucking time

Check into temp agencies if you don't have a job lined up. They're shit work, but you can save up a few hundred per week and be set to rent a place out in three weeks or so.

If you can get a solid paying job before that, then even better. Try to get what free food you can so you don't set yourself back on getting a place from buying too much junk food. Eat canned foods and fruit, not fast food.

Try to find national Forest as you can set up camp for free. That or homeless shelters. Shower at truck stops when necessary.

I can see myself now carrying a piece of plywood across the city to get it to my tree of choice.

I really think I'm going to try the tree idea (just sleeping in it, not building a tree house). I think I can manage to take a fall and learn my lesson if worst comes to worse.

So I've generated a list of the things I believe I'll be needing:

Toothpaste
Toothbrush
Comb
7 pairs of underwear
7 pairs of socks
3 pairs of jeans (so I can wear one while I do my laundry on the other two)
A good jacket (for nights just in case)
4 shirts
Soap
Floss
My electric razor (it holds a good charge and doesn't take long to charge so I can plug it in when I find an outlet for my phone to charge on)
and a Towel

For food that I'll carry with me on hand, I'll probably just take a container of peanut butter  I'll get more stuff along the way.

Anything else anyone thinks I should add?

Yeah, a hammock would be nice. I'm trying to stay well hidden though from other homeless people and junkies and whatnot. Plus I want to preferably stay in the city when I sleep instead of hiking out into the woods every afternoon to pitch the hammock.

This one time I was houselessly rolling through houston texas, and I climbed on a rooftop of an abondand bar and stayed the night.

Your best bet though is go for the heavily wooded areas.  Then you will begin to realize how little are left... anyway...

the best sleep spots are the ones that are in plain sight but noone sees you.  I've done it for 2 years or so you just gotta wake up at the crack of dawn.

all you need is some 550 cord, a tarp, a sleeping bag, a water bottle, a knife... or just a bunch of money... haha

Being homeless really blows man.  I've been there.
I would head up to your local dss and get some food stamps on the spot.  Get a bicycle.  Get a tent.  Find a job.  Take as much side work as you can.  Remain proactive.  You can be in a place of your own soon if you're working hard or smart. Labor ready will give your work on the spot and pay your the same day. Research them.  Craig list labor and gigs section usually has some good opportunities for same day pay. Planet fitness is a good idea for showers and a locker.

Then I'm coming back and getting the rest of my things so I can hopefully move there and be stable :pipesmoke:

It's a master plan I've been working on for a while now. I'll come back to this post with pictures and stuff after the month is up and elaborate more on what's going on through my head.

I leave Saturday morning :kingtard:

Please consider calling a shelter. They will provide you with food, clothing, and showers if they have them. Some may be booked up for the day while others require an interview process. Some only require that you show up first thing in the morning in order to secure your spot. Consider this so you don't have to sleep on the street.

Sleep with your shoes as a pillow or people will steal them.

Never mind, I just realized you are becoming homeless intentionally and not out of unfortunate circumstance.

I would get a tent if I were you, some fishing poles, swim trunks, pots and pans, and head to Venice Beach. Plenty of homeless people just live in their tents all day and eat and cook the fish they catch, not a bad life for a bum if you ask me.

Tenting it up is most comfortable to me.
Dont even realize your homeless, just feels like camping.
Heavily wooded areas or even small parks outsid3 of town where cops dont check. If you hit a campground they usually have bath houses.

I really have no clue why someone would do this aside from financial reasons, but even then I'm sure you could find a really sketchy apartment on the cheap.

Well I mean it is for financial reasons. I just could prolong it if I wanted to but I'm impatient and want to get shit done now. I'm also very miserable in my small town and have been homeless for a couple weeks before in Oregon during the winter.

This isn't why I'm going but it'll also give me time to put a few things into perspective. I like the adventure and the thrill as well. I'm confident that this journey will achieve what I seek to accomplish.

I have my list of things I'll need now and I'll have enough cash to eat, shower, and keep my belongings safe. If I can stick out the sleeping for a month then I'll be golden.

ENO doublenest hammocks are the shit and pack down to like the size of a fist.  Also, take a tarp or something, you can make a decent canopy with that and some cordage if you use a hammock for sleeping.

Carry a good knife of some kind. You might get hassled by the police for this, but homeless people get killed all the time and no one investigates or gives a fuck.

Dude, I am not trying to shit on you

There are tree hammocks

But if you aren't trained properly how to enter a tree as well as trained in tying a NUMBER of certain knots I wouldn't do it its not worth the danger

Honestly if u were gonna be in the upper halfway of NJ I would drive to you and help u set the tree boat up, but I just don't think that's worth your consideration

www.treestuff.com if u decide to do that but please don't kill yourself doing it, they have tree hammocks

What's so dangerous about hanging a hammock?
Personally I just use a couple of halter hitches
Also use another really basic knot which is similar to an alpine knot or a bowline

You can get ultralight hammocks for cheap (~$20) that barely take up any room.
That would be my best recommendation provided that there are some trees in your area. Also don't forget a water canteen!
Good luck.

Yeah, get a new camping hammock with a mosquito net and a light weight tarp. Hammock is $20, tarp is less than $10.Cheaper if used. Also get an led flashlight, knife/multitool, music, and a lot of weed and LSD.

There are much better places to be homeless than Texas. Go somewhere nice that has a beach that has showers and fun people and nice scenery.

What will you be doing all day when you're homeless and why only a month? Are you going to try to find work and a place to live or just going on an adventure?

Good luck

Bring a pair of nail clippers, maybe a refillable water bottle as well.

I always found it useful when going on adventures to bring a few zip lock bags with me, you never know when your gonna get caught in a pissing rain storm with no shelter and can keep certain things dry like your cell phone, wallet, weed, shit like that.

Same, I've always contemplated how bad that would suck. The thing that would bother me the most is the fact that you would NEVER be able to get comfortable in your sleep. EVER.

Not only that, but you would always be woken up at the buttcrack of dawn from construction noise and traffic and random people walking around and typical city noise. Sunlight blazing all into your eyes and on your body, and it's even worse if it's cold in the wintertime.

No wonder people booze and drug it up, they practically have to knock themselves out just to pass out for a couple hours.

I could actually stand to eat people's leftovers or go dumpster diving, but damn the inability to sleep comfortably at all would practically drive me crazy.

I used to know an African guy who told stories of sleeping in trees, according to him, you tie a belt or 2 around your midsection and the adjacent branch. This way you can't fall.  Good luck!

Sleeping inbetween 2 trees in a hammock is the best.  Not knowing where your going to end up that night after you wake up is wonderful.  It does get old.

Homeless is such a strong word.  Its houseless.  Your being is your home.

Being houseless isn't retarded if your allergic to paying rent.

I've been living on the streets since the 4th too.  I have a car to sleep in though so it makes everything soon much easier.  Waiting on a closure on a house in about 3 more weeks.  If you can somehow get a car, your life will be way easier.  I'm aware your situation is different though but just saying.  I shower at my local gym and charge my phone/equip in my car also.  Wash my clothes at a local laundromat.

If I were you though, the first thing I would do is set up camp in a local forest somewhere.  Just like you stated, personally myself, I'd build a tree-hut or platform, then eventually add walls.  Over everything else, that's what I would do first.

It's not as hard as it seems so don't take being homeless to serious.  As long as you have income, your good.

Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)

Nah I could actually stay where I'm at right now for the rest of the year (probably longer). But I won't.

Would it be possible for you to stay on the outskirts of the city? I was homeless for a short period of time ages ago, didn't have a lot of resources, too paranoid to seek most of them out. But if you have a clean hand towel you can clean up in pretty much any rest room. And people are more likely to give you stuff if you're not in the core of the city, where they see homeless beggers everyday.

These days I have a home but I still like my space so I frequently camp in my tent but I still drive to work. My office has a gym and a shower so it's fairly convenient. They also have a good cafe.

Right? OP should make videos documenting his journey and post it on YouTube. With good editing and a good storyline, I bet it would reach a bunch of hits and you could make money off it.

Jesus
Fucking
Christ

It has been a very eventful 3 days.

I'm too tired to really go into much detail about it but I thought you guys were worth the update to at least let you know that I am safe, I've found a roommate and I've already paid the rent for the month of September, I'm not starving, and I just got a job today. I go in tomorrow for my first day of work, the lady I'm rooming with is incredibly sweet and compassionate and her boyfriend who comes over regularly has been absolutely nothing but friendly and welcoming to me. Things are going pretty great. I still get down about the problems going on in the world in general but as far as my personal life is going, this is running WAY smoother than I was expecting it to.

I didn't take a bunch of vids and pics but I have a pic of me completely soaking wet in the planet fitness locker room because it was raining really hard my first day here.

I actually haven't had to sleep a single day on the streets thanks to my new friend who took me in so quickly. I am not and I refuse to take advantage of their hospitality. I am paying my way now and I think I'm really just going straight for once in my life. I don't like the idea of being apart of the system but right now it's kind of nice to see my life making a turn for the better.

Thanks for all the good vibes from you guys. The Shroomery has taken me to places I never imagined in my life.
I definitely have to pay my way where I'm at, I can't just be a bum. But I'm starting to realize that even when you start making money, it doesn't have to be everything. You can still be a nice person and care about the world around you.
I'm sure I'm just rambling on, I took mushrooms earlier and I've had a lot on my mind to add to this experience.

What can I say? It's been crazy

Yeah, but people who beg for change suck.  So depending on where you want to be homeless there will always be food and shelter for you if you are in an industrialzed country.

And since you are in the U.S. google top ten places to be homeless.  I've gone to a city and dropped out of college with 20 bucks to my name.  Use the internet to find food banks, daily homeless food service, and shelters.

It sucks.  But you survive.  Just never leave anything unattended or it will be gone in a heartbeat.  And watch for the jackels that come out at night.  No loss of pride to avoid people or change sides of the streets or even run if it comes to it.

Survival becomes everything within bounderies of course of some of your own making and some how society is set up.  Looking into office spaces wishing you could sleep in one and downtown people enjoying life like without a care in the world.

The worst is weekends.  Yet if you panhandle I guess it's the best.  I don't.

Fucking bus routes don't go close to where I work. I have to ride the bus for 3 hours to get to the nearest bus stop close to my work and then walk for another hour...
Planning on getting a bicycle when I can afford one....

So would I but don't put all your apples in on basket as the saying goes.  Change jobs or move urban.  Done the 4 four hour commute at a call center in the middle of a commercial zone in the middle of nowhere.  Not worth wasting your life that way IMO.

A shorter one was a 9 hour work day and it took me months to realize I spent sun up to sun down working for this shitty bank call center and it's not worth it.  SERIOUSLY IT IS NOT WORTH IT.  Wish I would of learned this many years ago.

Gotta live though.  The streets suck.

Couchsurfing if you have some money.  Yet even then if you let others know your situation, most will help you.  If you come by Utah you can stay for up to a week as per my lease agreement.  Best of luck.

How long is work? 8? =16? 24-16=enough time to be a nice guy?

If you were still not house bound this woulden't be a problem in a way.  Is there a nice patch of woods on that 1 hour walk?  The home bums dont hang out on the outskirts reguraly.:cool:JK man.

That job better be worth the transit.

That girl is def off limits though.

Read most of this thread and I gotta say man, you are one lucky person for having the people that you do around you to take you in. Whoever your friend is, is a saint. I hope that trip went well, must have been an interesting one considering you were in an unfamiliar place.

Best of luck dood, hope that job goes well!

Well I like to cook. But they know I don't have much work experience as one. I put in 14 applications at different places and they were the first ones to call me for an interview and they start my training on Saturday morning (tomorrow).

And yes, I'm very lucky. I put a lot of confidence in the universe (as odd as that may seem to some) and it appears to get rid of the obstacle completely when I do. Good friends, good karma, and a universe that seems to be bending probabilities in my favor. These are what makes my world go round.

Lots of tips for a cook?  Tips are usually split between servers,  bus boys,  and the matradee..  Either way,  it's a good opportunity and I'm sure you will do great brother.  I'm looking for  work right now but going through legal troubles and lost my vehicle too.

I haven't read through this thread but I'm going to leave some tips since I was legit homeless for well over a year.

First of all, there are places that are way more accepting of homeless people then others. The town I just moved from has A LOT of resources. At least, 15 soup or community kitchens. They have a place there called the shalom center where they not only offer breakfast and lunch, but you receive mail there... sign up for showers or to do laundry... They have public phones and people can leave messages for you there (for jobs and such). They have case workers that help you get what you need (housing applications, birth-certifications, social security cards, ID's...). They have both short-term and long term storage... They have a "Respite room" where you can go and sleep in a quiet, safe and controlled area. Upstairs they have free-clothes... Church's come on certain days and you can sign up for free-gift cards (once every 6 months). They give out free bus passes twice a week... They give out sleeping bags, backpacks, flashlights, socks... the list goes on and on.

In the winter the shelters open, and the ones in Bloomington are low-barrier. They actually serve really really good food surprisingly.

If you decide to panhandle or make a sign, always remember that asking for money is technically illegal... so say, "Anything helps".

Get yourself a tent and find a spot. I seriously have done it all. When I say I've laid my head in the street, I am not joking. I have slept countless times in the mulch at the library believe it or not. Alleyways, alcoves, nooks...

Talk to strangers. This is the best advice I can give you. When people hear your story you will be surprised the connections you can make and the help you will get.

Get a bicycle or start riding the bus. Finally become intimate with your city, and this only happens by walking the streets and strolling through it's hills.

Learn to busk or something else that's creative. A closed month doesn't get fed. The city will give you what you need, but if you ask for it it will also give you what you want. People are way more receptive if you give something back... (jokes, music, funny signs, dancing.) But the only way you'll ever get someone to give is to pull them out of their bubble for a second to empathize with your situation. It's pretty easy for some people to just walk by and ignore you, but it's a little harder when you engage them. A lot of people wear headphones (or as I like to call them "bum-blockers") to avoid this.

20 pound bag of rice
10 pound bag of black beans

Stay away from canned stuff as more than half of the weight is water.

This only applies to foods that are shelf stable in a can or in a bag, of course.

It's summer and you're gonna be in a tree I'm assuming relatively close to water;

Buy DEET or you will be miserable and not last a couple days.

Camping stove. A lot of decent ones out there for under $50

Hydrophobic spray. I cannot stress enough how important this shit is. Spray it on everything you wear, your shelter, etc. Anything you don't want to get wet.

I'm just going off of my back country camping experience which essentially what you're doing. I did it for a month with the exception of a hotel room in Vegas for one night and it was relatively easy man. Good luck. Sounds like you're gonna have a fun adventure.

I would personally ditch all beauty products, razor, comb, shampoo. All you need is cheap soap. Preferably something natural but I guess it doesn't really matter as long as it's cheap. My necessary items are toothbrush/toothpaste and deodorant.

And I think most importantly is a great hiking backpack for all your belongings That should be your biggest and most useful investment.

I posted the information for anyone who might find themselves in the homeless situation, and happen across this. Not just the OP.

Random ass update to this thread. I'm still in the town I came to. Everything is still going good. Didn't expect to even last the whole month to be completely honest.

I moved to the city over a year and a half ago. Since then, I moved away because I was robbed three times, evicted to due a roommate, and everybody did heroin (uck).

When I moved there, I lived in a tent during the spring. I immediately got a job and paid a security deposit on an apartment. The landlord let me pay the rent at a later time. Try to negotiate a littler. Save your pennies.

Camp if you can. Hang a plastic or metal jug in a tree. Poke holes in the bottom. Put water in it. Hurry, wash, and rinse.

Find a job ASAP and get proof of income. Landlords will love you then.

Pick your crowd carefully. If you make friends with poor junkies, then you will get robbed. If you make friends with goal oriented folks, then you may find a friend.

Wendys fast food corp. policy is too give a free meal to the individual who tells them they are lost, have no money and are hungry. Saved me in a pinch a couple of times. Good luck.

Streets ain't got no WiFi. They have free frostie tokens. 2 bucks. I bought 10 of them and gave them to the people I see daily sleeping on the streets. Technically supposed to buy something but the one near us will give it to you.

I give a lot of my stuff away a ton of food. I'm lucky that I can do that. I'm an alcoholic ex drug addict so it's plausible I'd be that person. I'm living in a closet atm.
