Psychedelic Mushroom?
    #23552267 - 08/18/16 05:07 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hello! This website has inspired my inner mushroom hunter, and I have adjusted my sleeping schedule so that I can wake up as the sun rises, in order to most easily find fungus before the near daily rains we've been getting here wash them away. I need help identifying this species, and whether or not it has any psychedelic value.

This species was found in SE Michigan.

Caps: A dark gray color. They look like inside out nipples from the top. The caps are pretty thin and flimsy, and bruise to almost black. The center cirlce of the caps are an off-orange color.

Gills: Also a dark gray color. This species seems to produce spores like nobody's business, as I can see a jet black powder forming in between many of the gills. Over time they become almost jet-black, and do not attach to the stem.

Stems: Off-white in color. They are completely hollow, and as such, are EXTREMELY flimsy. They almost look translucent. These mushrooms only come out the morning after a rain and are easily destroyed by low gusts of wind or a small shower. The stems break apart into strings. No bruising is apparent even after much handling.

Spores: Jet black. Spores could be layed out just by dropping the cap on a piece of paper. Highly abundant. I didn't even need to cover the cap to get a good print.

Any and all info on these mushrooms is GREATLY appreciated. I have taken much interest in the subject. Thank you!

Also, here is another species I found growing on a hay bale. I can't give much info on them, as I don't want to touch them. They look deadly. Any info on these will be appreciated as well!

Parasola species and Coprinopsis species I think. Both are ink caps and not psychedelic.

My hunt continues. I will be trekking into the woods shortly to find something on dead wood.

Thank you very much!

What active species do you expect to find on wood in Michigan?  Gyms?

If you're looking for actives or any mushroom for that matter you need to read up on them and target a specific species.  Just picking randoms and hoping for the best is like buying a powerball ticket, same odds.

Michigan
Gymnopilus aeruginosus
Gymnopilus junonius
Gymnopilus luteofolius
Gymnopilus luteus
Panaeolus cinctulus
Pholiotina cyanopus (link)
Pholiotina smithii
Pluteus americanus
Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe liniformans var.americana
Psilocybe quebecensis
Psilocybe silvatica

Here is a list of active mushrooms that grow in Michigan.  This time of year and for a beginner I would target Panaeolus cinctulus on livestock or horse manure, or growing in manured fields/garden beds.
