Does alcohol really have any health benefits? * 1
    #23551836 - 08/17/16 11:52 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I am yet to have a few drinks a day for a period of time and feel healthier. No drug other than white tea has made me feel more healthy or enhanced my physiology directly

I think that the idea that alcohol even in moderation is healthy. Sounds like garbage to me

I DO think that alcohol has social benefits. But 0 physiological health benefits. I still drink, but I accept that it has negative effects. For fucks sake, even xanax feels healthier in a sense to me

I just don't see convincing evidence that this could be true.

Any comments?

EDIT: isnt it a coincidence that all the big legal drugs; coffee and alc both have health benefits? I think its bullshit

From the NIH

Quote:

Health Benefits of Moderate Alcohol Consumption:
Moderate alcohol consumption, according to the 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, is up to 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks per day for men.38
Moderate alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects on health. These include decreased risk for heart disease and mortality due to heart disease, decreased risk of ischemic stroke (in which the arteries to the brain become narrowed or blocked, resulting in reduced blood flow), and decreased risk of diabetes.39
In most Western countries where chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD), cancer, stroke, and diabetes are the primary causes of death, results from large epidemiological studies consistently show that alcohol reduces mortality, especially among middle-aged and older men and women—an association which is likely due to the protective effects of moderate alcohol consumption on CHD, diabetes, and ischemic stroke.39
It is estimated that 26,000 deaths were averted in 2005 because of reductions in ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, and diabetes from the benefits attributed to moderate alcohol consumption.40
Expanding our understanding of the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and potential health benefits remains a challenge, and although there are positive effects, alcohol may not benefit everyone who drinks moderately.
More information about the potential health benefits, as well as risks, of moderate alcohol consumption can be found at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15201626

Irrelevant. I havent taken the time to sort through thousands of pages of research, and Im not going to. The posted pool is "most western countries". These are millions of people who share a fairly similar lifestyle and are exposed to the same nature/nurture. Now I'm not saying correlation is causation either. The crux of the matter here is that, statistically, moderate drinkers are less likely to die from heart disease related problems.

There are too many open variables. These people more then likely ate a standard american diet and were unhealthy, so it made it seem as though the minor mitigating effects toward cardiovascular disease helped.
take an asprin. the average westerner is in terrible shape.

This. Position papers from major agencies (e.g., NIH) are not taken lightly. The data are usually quite robust before publication. This is much more than a "shred" of evidence.

Intelligent burn! :solidnod:

Drinking one serving of alcohol per day (1 beer or 1 shot or 1 glass of wine) has been known to help your heart be healthier.

But any more than one drink and it has never effects.

There's a tradition in France/Switzerland to use alcohol spirit to seep out the goodness from various botanical sources. Absanthe, Chartreuse and the Swiss Pastis (popularised by the French) use the alcohol as a solvent to dissolve essential oils of various herbs into a tonic that can then be diluted (or just drunken neat as people are wont to do). It's what gives them their bright colours, and in the case of pastis, turns cloudy when diluted due to the emulsifying of water/alcohol/oil.

Other drinks like bitters also contain various compounds that whilst unpalatable in food are tolerated in drinks. Yeah, the alcohol puts a toxic load on the liver, but it's a way to concentrate the goodness of various herbs and make a tonic.

Part of me wonders if I can get ahold of genuine absanthe, to seep some wormwood in spiritus or vodka and when it's done drink it as I'm pretty sure I have parasites in my body and I want them out.

Nicotine when metabolised in the body becomes nicotinic acid. It's more commonly known as niacin.

Im just talking about alcohol and coffee. I see many people use the excuse to drink loads of coffee every morning. Im sure 1 or 2 cant hurt, and neither will a few drinks, but i dont believe there are benefits to either one. Youre better off without alcohol.

People will drink regardless anyways.

Someone posted this pic on twitter and i couldnt help but  The poster has an alcoholic family. They dont think so obviously, because they believe this.

Notice the comments though. Basically "yes! Thank you for justifying my drinking habit!" thats just how i see it. Its hard for me to believe. Its your choice though anyway, i know you like your drink! If you feel fine with your current intake then cool.

That family i posted about is the type to use any excuse to drink. Hardly ever in moderation.

I just dont like alcohol
