it's for Acidic_Sloth.

so here is your question in motion. is it free will, or fate that you decided to make this thread with hearts you couldn't have been all the less aware of, and then someone has to point it out, thus provided a valuable spore, of sorts, depending on how you look at things.

Free will is an illusion of the mind, a construct of the narrative we create in our heads.

I believe the opposite of what Sam Harris does on this particular subject.

Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. One thing is for sure, it would be a lot easier to push all my bad choices off onto them never being my decisions in the first place. Sometimes I honestly wonder if they really were my decisions though. Hindsight is a bitch. Get to look on those mistakes and wonder why you even made them in the first place.

That you don't have freewill does not mean you can't own up to your decisions. They are still yours whether they are the product of your circumstance or not.

my take: the debate is pointless and counterproductive because whether or not we have free will, it is best to believe that we do. If we believe we have it, and don't for example: no problem. It was unavoidable. If however we DO have free will, but don't believe that we do, it limits us and leads to lazy choices.

Believing that we don't have free will doesn't lead to lazy choices if your destiny is productive.

I believe in a but of a hybrid of the two.

I believe that there are certain influences on your life, and certain events that you have absolutely zero influence or say over.

The circumstances around your birth, any disability you may have, the wealth of your parents and associated upbringing, and the time of your death are all factors that are really beyond your control. That is your fate.

What you can control is what you do with the time you have and what you are given. That gives you some level of free will within the constrains of your fate.

This is kind of like the "Which came first" question.  It's really just however you choose to conceptualize things.

The best description I've ever come up with to explain the interaction of fate vs free will is that of weaving.

When you weave you have warp threads that are fixed and do not change. That is like your fate. The factors in your life that you have no influence over.

You also have the weft, those are the threads that run parallel to the warp. Those you can manipulate and change how they interact.

But it is only the combination of both that creates the tapestry of your life.

that's a great analogy, indeed.

or it could all just be an accident, independent of any free will (which could exist) or fate (or destiny; which could exist).

The real paradox is that both free will and fate exist simultaneously.
