Casing pH
    #2355093 - 02/19/04 04:19 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I cant seem to find any horticulture CaCO3... I can however find it in calcium supplement pill form.... Would this be ok to dissolve in H2O and add to casing mix?

Also how do test your casings pH level?  Do you just throw some CaCO3 in there or do you measure it?  I want to get something to test it, can the strips (i believe it is litimus paper) we use in science class work?  Do i need a electronic pH tester to get accurate readings from soil?

On Ebay the strips cost $6, the electronic testers range from $10 (soil only) to $25 (works on any substance).

Thanks for any input you have! :sun:

Casing pH isn't all that important I don't think...
I know it's of some importance, but I don't know if you should sweat it that much. Just use some powdered lime stone to bring the pH down it is I believe. I've never dealt with pH though, so idk. I've never had any problem with my casings fruiting.

Thanks, but i know the range of pH i want....

My questions are...

Is calcium pill supplements acceptable to add to the casing? Is the binder, or anything else in it going to prevent good fruiting?

What is the best way to test pH? Are strips acceptable? Or would $5 more for a digital soil pH tester be better?

You add lime to bring up the ph not to lower it. My peat is ph=5, I add lime to get a ph=7
PH 0-6 acidic
PH 7 neutral
PH 8-10 alkaline

Sorry, add gypsum, lime, try with the pills, just don?t add magnesium. Test the ph with some strips and you?re ready to sterilize or pasteurize.

the best way would of course be a fantastic digital meter. the strips can be employed by adding the matterial you want to test to distilled water and testing the water mix.

read the ingredients on the pills, if it does not contain the active ingredients your looking for dont use them. the binder/inert ingredients in most pills are celluolose, lactose, sugar, and/or some other stuff thats to inert to harm anything.

I have tons of gypsum and low-magnesium lime, and USP grade CaCO3...I'd be happy to send you some if you're in need...PM me if you need a hook-up.
