Allergies to chanterelles

Anyone here ever experienced an allergic reaction to chanterelles? I made my lunch for today last night, I dry sautéed chanterelles and a very small of shiitake also, onions and garlic, a tiny bit of olive oil, salt and pepper, shredded rotisserie chicken. It was so delicious but about 5 minutes into eating it I started overproducing saliva and getting very mucus heavy. Feeling persisted for a couple of hours. I have always been able to eat chants and shiitake with no problem before but probably never in the quantity that I ate today. Anybody got any thoughts?

An allergy is definitely possible. It could have been a reaction to something else though. If you have been able to eat them before, I don't see why you would all of a sudden become allergic (it is possible to develop allergies like that, but not so quickly). Seeing as you are a trusted identifier, I doubt you ate the wrong mushrooms, but there's no way for us to really know.

I could do without shiitake, but chants are a staple.

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed about it, they are amongst my favs. And they were definitely chants, beautiful, pristine fresh ones at that.

You can't accept it as that. Just try a small portion of chants alone. It's worth rulling that out. Was everything from familiar stomping grounds?

Yep, all from one of my tried and true spots. Maybe it was the shiitake...

I've never had a reaction to chants but I do get a reaction from some oysters. Within 15 minutes of eating them my heart starts racing and I get mildly itchy. What's strange is that it's not with all oysters. Sometimes it happens from store bought oysters and one cluster is fine one night, the next cluster, not so good. I was thinking it could be something other than the actual mushroom. Some type of mold, or bacteria, that was in it.
Don't know for sure but I'm now sketchy with oysters which is a damn shame because there's a ton around here all year long.
-------------------- I'd like to think I'm smart enough to realize how much knowledge I don't have.

sorry to hear about that doctorghosty
i was about to ask if you have collected them from a new location and maybe it could be something present in the soil and therefore in the mushroom, but it seems it is not the case.
My girlfriend once had a strange reaction to a mixture of Lactarius deliciosus and Lactarius sanguifllus, i was about to take her to the hospital when she finally started felling better. It was not the first time she ate these species and i am very comfortable in collecting them, furthermore i also had the same meal and didnt feel anything strange.
While she was felling quite nauseous and vomiting i remember thinking "Shit, there goes my favourite hobby!!" heheh. Fortunately she finally calmed down, started felling better and fell asleep.
Although i really enjoy collecting mushrooms the truth is that i do not eat huge quantities, i have always heard that this is something that you shouldnt as mushrooms accumulate great quantities of heavy metals and also many species when eaten in great quantities can lead to cases of rhabdomyolysis.
cheers

i get this with cultivated bispora i'll also flush up and a rash develops on my face but it's only some of them and it's the entire batch, then i get new ones from the store and they are fine i can eat loads of them, i'm glad i'm not the only one this phenomenon happens too.

With each containing one of the following: Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk? Didn't think so. This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.

Bioaccumulation does happen, but I wouldn't worry about it if your specimens are collected in forests, or areas with no human foot print.
As far as rhabdomyolysis goes, I have no idea, do you have a source which points to commonly collected edible fungi causing this?
The only mushrooms I have had reactions to are reishi, and they dried my skin out badly.

Thanks for the links, but from what I gather, not many genera cause this.

you are welcome
a fast literature survey indicates cases of rhabdomyolysis occurring with the ingestion of Thricoloma sp., Boletus sp. Leccinum sp. and Agaricus sp.
Do not know if there other species than can cause it, and in the reported cases it is a matter of the quantities consumed which leads us to one of the basic principles of toxicology :"sola dosis facit venenum", that is "the dose makes the poison".

lots of anecdotal reports of people developing sensitivities to mushrooms after consuming them for years and years. most of us have probably heard about the morel sensitivity that people develop, but it seems its not just morels for some people. again, anecdotal, but some reports here: http://ehealthforum.com/health/topic56863.html
my wife has a sensitivity to all mushrooms unless they're cooked verrrry well. gastro issues galore unless i cook the life out of em. so far i've not had any issues with any species, even lightly sauteed. oysters are the only ones i cook to very well done if i'm cooking for myself.

Only one way to find out, eat just some chants on their own. Rooting for it not to be, my friend.
