Someone explain to me how to work these
    #23550625 - 08/17/16 05:29 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

1. How do I work a trick worm
2. curly tail Grub
3. lizard
4. topwater spook

Its worth 5 shrooms to anyone who can give me a good explanation.

Basically it seems to be fucking impossible to find a good explanation online for working specific plastics/lures.

The only one of these I ever use is a trick worm (I also fish a topwater frog) and I work it really slow with a carolina rig, letting it sink, lifting and letting it sink. It works but id like some more methods.

thanks

All you need is a rapalla.  This dude, right here..

Plain jane...  flick it on out there and let it sit for a minute like its dead and got dropped by a bird... then if nothing hits it, jerk twitch it like its half dead and dieing..(easy lunches are good lunches).. switch it up with just a smooth reel in like he's just swimming to meet a friend on the other bank..

You ever see a frog swim?  Thats how you use the frog lure.
Ever see a worm squirm while suspended in liquid?  That's how you use that worm lure, but they suck ass... use real worms, they smell, taste, and act better..

Oh yea, lizards fall into the same category as frogs but they swim a little more fluid like an alligator where frogs kind of "bob" forward, like they do on land..

Make them look like they got hit by a truck and are dieing (dont get too aggressive otherwise the 'the easy meal' becomes intimidating)

All you really need is that rapalla, some chicken livers, and a few live worms and pretty much any pond will respond..from my experience..

I use Curly grub tails here in Aus and do very little to work them compared to something like a jerk shad. I like to literally just drop them to the bottom, put the rod in a holder and crank it 1-4 feet off the bottom. As the boat pitches around it imparts action and the curly tail will entice the bite as it gently wafts around.

On the first three, texas rig them or rig them weightless. Maybe throw a split shot on the line 7-12 inches ahead of the line for the trick worm.
Basically, just drag them along the bottom.  Or you could twitch them for a little more action. Or if the fish are really biting, jump them along the bottom. Just find what they like and stick with it. Twitch-twitch-pause works too.

As far as the spook, it might take a bit of work, but you will catch monster bass on it!

It is all about the wrist. Cast it out and make big twitches with the rod tip. Like 1-2 feet. Keep the rod tip pointed down and once you feel the lure's tension, move the tip back toward the lure. Keep doing this while simultaneously reeling in the slack. It's more of a thing you have to feel and learn. Learn it well and do it at dusk as it gets dark. You will learn to tell if the spook is walking by the plopping noise it makes.

Caught both of these on a Spook. Favorite lure.

Rapalas kick ass too though. I let my friend use one on a float trip, he caught a gar, smallmouth, and rainbow trout all on the same lure.

I just hope you catch some fish!

Also on the topwater, WAIT to set the hook until you FEEL a fish. They might miss the first time and strike again after a few seconds. It is easy to set the hook and make the lure come rocketing back over your head. It takes a bit of patience.

Hehe, Ive launched a few over my shoulder due to excitement.  Thats always fun in a tiny boat.

Fish seen to strike things sometimes.  Like if its a half dead fish (rapalla) they'll just hit it and try to kill it, not eat it yet.  You know what Im saying.

I tend to let them hook themselves, and then just kind of 'set' it,.  That shit on tv is ridiculous..

First look up Texas rig for the lizard and trick worm. Also Carolina rig for the lizard. For the trick worm you can also rig it wacky style with a hook pinned through the middle with no weight, hook point exposed. For the spook look up "walking the dog" on YT. Slack line while snapping the rod tip gently which gets the bait walking back and forth like a wounded bait fish. A curly tail grub is typically rigged on a round ball jig head. You straight slow grind swim them in or lift and drop.

New on here, but fishing is my thing.

I only fish saltwater now.  Surf and offshore. But I will offer some advice, change out the hooks on your hard baits to VMC 4x strong.  You won't go back.  Brought in an 8.5' dusky shark on one of my kingfish leaders that had #4 VMC hooks.  They VERY strong and VERY sharp.  Different days sometimes different movement.  Twitch twitch reel.  If you tie your super spook with a loop knot it will give it a little more side to side action when you are walking the dog..also having a rod with the right action/speed helps.  For example a popping cork rod is not the best suited when I'm throwing a broken back rapala.  My St. Croix 11.5' mojo and Legand are tits tossing 3.5oz poppers and iron to jacks..but my All Star Gulf stream is not.  Braided line is awesome but use a fluro leader..especially if you are really working a jerk bait hard the braid will eventually break.  I could go on for days..literally.  Keep practicing, fishing, and reading. Eventually it could pay off..tournaments pay out nice money and prizes...they are a long of fun and bragging rights.

I've never gone saltwater fishing.  I think it would be pretty fun..

I havent had enough practice with a bait caster though, I still explode the string every now and then

I could get it down though if I stuck with it for a minute..

Just takes practice.  Make sure your spool/bearing adjustment isnt too lose and the brakes are in/set right.  On large bait casters magging the reel works wonders.  Magging is gluing rare earth magnets on the inside of the left side plate (non handle side).  You have to play with magnet strength and distance but once you get that down the eddy curent that is formed slows the spool rotation to the speed of the line playing off the reel...you never get a backlash.  Long distance casters mod thier reels by magging and bearing upgrades and cast over 200 yards.  Launching a weight 600+' is a sight to be seen...feels good.  Took a countress amounts of casts, tangles, popped lines, broken cheap rods, and thumbs so burnt it resulted in blisters that popped out 1/2".

Yeah, I'd have to see it.  If you were visually pointing at things and going through the motions I'd have a better understanding of what you just said.  For the record though, that's got to be alright reeling in a 'better than average' shark and looking in it's eyes before you let it go..  that split second where he's like, wtf?  And you're like, wtf?  ...but neither of you say anything.

Awesome.  Always nice when you twitch twitch reel and feel that hard thump, set hook, and fish on!
When I get around to magging more reels I'll take some pictures and explain.  Catching sharks is my favorite on shore activity, catching them in a kayak is fun too. But the bad thing is they fight until complete exhaustion and that is not healthy for them at all and can die from it.  But you can't really bring a 'green'(full of life) shark up to the kayak without it going ape shit especially the bigger ones (7'ers).  On shore is definitely a better human to shark interaction.  Grabbing them by the tail and pulling ashore then getting the hook out take a picture then release.
