Made the switch from rye to WBS, and these are the first batch of fully colonized jars. 24, will be spawned in the near future. Was wondering what you all thought about their health. They appear to be healthier than my bacterial rye jars imo. Did I finally get some clean spawn? Let me know what you think

Well fuck haha I dont know what I can do better.. Made sure my grains were better moisture content, clean culture on agar, Li to jars, part SFDs part felt filters, think good sterile tech either way they're healthier than my last jars which have still produced enough to fascinate and entertain me so hopefully these do a little better and once I get clone cultures to grain I can finally get something clean.. Idk.

They look a bit bacterial but not unusable IMO. Might be able to get away with spawning. Up your PC times and double check the pressure you are at and that should serve you well methinks.

Alright will do, thanks pasty. Those were PCd a couple weeks ago now but I believe they were held at about 14 psi for like 1hr 45 mins or so, I'll try going like 2 hr 15 min next run.
Edit: I just remembered that it has been unfavorably hot here (was away) lately. Above 100 and the AC keeps it comfortable but the jars are still quite warm to the touch. Could be a factor.
Then again, bacteria probably couldn't bloom even in warmer temps if the cultures weren't still as present right? I'll keep working at it just happy to be a part of this fascinating world

It's next to impossible to completely kill all bacteria with the tools we have. Excessive temps will create a risk of blooms because of this. Remember that what we do when we "sterilize" is nothing more than creating a window to colonize and fruit.

First fruits from the Costa Rican tub.

This is my second tub, and I'm wondering if I'm getting smaller fruits because of a lack of moisture, or just because of MS. Though I see some people use up to 5-5.5 quarts of water to a brick of coir/two quarts verm, and I've been using the four quarts the original recipe calls for. Have already taken clones and will tinker with it as I go!

Tape a couple quarters on to your rocker... You'll get 15psi... My rye seemed to do better when I started the soak with hot ass water... Just adding my dos pesos

It's appreciated! However, I already have 3 quarters taped on to hit 14.5 otherwise it sits at like 11-12. Maybe I just need to buy a new PC? And I also start the soak with very hot water!

Ooohh. You could try an experiment! Or better yet make your wrongdoings right again with a peroxide bath.

are you using a presto?
is the pc leaking steam out the seal or something. if not your pc must not be made or designed for 15 psi cycles.... I highly recommend the 23 qt presto for this hobby. has lots of room and you can keep it at 17-20 psi safely by taping the quarters to the weight. Mine barely rocks or releases audible steam when at pressure.

I have a 16 and 23 presto. It seems I have to replace the rubber ring at least once a year.

Waited just a tad bit too long to harvest this Lizard King tray maybe but oh well. Got about 380 wet grams off this flush from only one qt of MS spawn. Not too bad eh?
