Gel type food coloring for agar?
    #23547241 - 08/16/16 03:32 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I asked my friend for food coloring from the store and this is what I got. Anyone have experience with it?  Will it work for agar?  I will experiment if needed.

I followed the recipe for the pastyplates but omitted corn syrup and used the food coloring. Think the preservatives will stop the fungus from growing?

I never did either. A UK supermarket brand (tesco) openly declare ingredients on most of their "own brand products", including alcohol which they are not legally obliged to do.

Some of the liquid ones also have additives/preservatives, but interestingly it depends on the colour, which seems obvious now I see what is producing the colour. I think we add such small amounts that it does not really matter, but the pastes might have more in them with that sugar.

RED
Ingredients
Water,Colours (E163 Anthocyanins, E160c Paprika Extract) ,Preservatives (E330 Citric Acid, E202 Potassium Sorbate) ,Carrier (E433 Polysorbate 80) ,Antioxidants (E304 Ascorbyl Palmitate, E307 Alpha-Tocopherol)

GREEN
Ingredients
Glycerine,Emulsifier (E433 Polysorbate 80) ,Water ,Carrier (E1520 Propylene Glycol) ,Spirulina Concentrate ,Preservative (E330 Citric Acid) ,Colour (E100 Curcumin)

BLUE
Ingredients
Glycerine,Water ,Spirulina Concentrate ,Preservative (E330 Citric Acid)

YELLOW
Ingredients
Carrier (E1520 Propylene Glycol),Emulsifier (E433 Polysorbate 80) ,Colour (E100 Curcumin)

So blue might look like the best, just containing citric acid. I wonder if this would be common enough across brands. Maybe the other additives are quite benign, red lists Potassium Sorbate which I recognise from homebrewing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_sorbate
Quote:

Also known as "wine stabilizer", potassium sorbate produces sorbic acid when added to wine. It serves two purposes. When active fermentation has ceased and the wine is racked for the final time after clearing, potassium sorbate renders any surviving yeast incapable of multiplying. Yeast living at that moment can continue fermenting any residual sugar into CO2 and alcohol, but when they die, no new yeast will be present to cause future fermentation.

So I would guess this is bad, but perhaps it is not that bad for myc and so could even be beneficial.

max use in wine is 300ppm could be quite higher in products made to be diluted.

in molds sorbate turns off enzymes for metabolism, shuts down the citric acid cycle and a bunch of other enzymes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zygosaccharomyces_bailii

one of the few molds that can tolerate preservative use

I used gel food colorings before and just used less honey. It worked fine honestly.....BUT, I also used waaay less. Like a drop or 2. It was the exact same kind as you have in your pic.

I used two drops and omitted the honey/corn syrup. We'll see how they turn out.

Does food coloring really help that much? Maybe I'm just dumb, but I can't imagine it making that much of a difference.

This is my first time with agar, so I can't say from experience, but some trusted cultivators say that it is easier to spot contaminants (and mycellium) on colored agar than whatever vaguely white shade it is normally.  I'm using glad mini-rounds as well, which offer less visibility than petri dishes.  Really I'm just trying to follow the tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=2&Number=19208976&PHPSESSID=&fpart=1#19208976

You still have to use a little honey. I used like 1.3 grams instead of 1.8 because I used the gel drops.

Alright, I suppose I'll grab some food coloring the next time I'm at the store. Anything that could help me identify contaminants is worth a shot.
