No Man's Sky * 2
    #23547587 - 08/16/16 05:35 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I've been playing this game a lot for the past couple days, and just the vast variety of planets and things that can be on planets is just astounding to me, everyone who plays this game will have a uniquely different experience.

For example, the most amazingly hilarious thing just happened. I just got done smoking a bowl, and started playing, and I ran into this Gek alien on some random planet. I don't have very much of their language unlocked yet, so this Gek looks me right in the eye, and no joke says

"Friend.... Gek high..... Help friend..... High....!"

and the prompt says

"The trader seems ill. its skin is flaking, and its eyes lack a certain luster. It slowly grabbles at me , and as it does, its voice croaks."

"A strange dry, flat stench fills every corner of the facility. I inspect my exosuit for things i could offer it..."

A. Give water from hydration system
B. Give food from nutrient system

He must have had some gnarly dry mouth

Anything hilariously awesome or unique happen to anyone else playing?

:threadmonitor: before it came out I was pretty tempted to buy a ps4 just so I could play this game, it looked pretty amazing. I've heard some pretty lacklustre reviews since its come out though so I'm holding off for the time being, but maybe this thread will convince me otherwise

I don't know much about No Man's Sky. I looked it up and seen they are releasing a new Sid Meyer's Civilization game. It looks awesome

I pirated the game on PC. Ran around for half hour, got bored and quit. Seems like from the reviews most people find the game pretty boring.

The UI is retarded too.

The game definitely has its issues, but it also has the ideas and framework to make an extremely good game - I'd say 6 months of patching will take it from a unique but semi-flawed 6/10 - to hopefully atleast a solid 8.. I still have a good amount of fun playing it, but it definitely could use more scripted events/AI interraction/better combat and a few other things.

See but thats a huge problem. The game should have been $20, and sold as a early access.

Fuck these developers charging full price for unfinished games with promises they will add more content in the future.

The concept behind the game is cool. It could definitely be a good game in the future, but right now its borderline a walking simulator in space and definitely not worth the asking price.

Then again, im a pirate anyway so who am I to talk?

Game of the year, easily.
Just needs some patching and some fixes here and there.

You think its better then the new Doom? I havent played it because of the denuvo protection and price, but Doom seemed to get a way better reception from gamers then NMS.

If I buy a new game soon, it will be the new doom.

But I may well get NMS in a year or so when it's been improved .

This game is pretty damn fun even if it does have some flaws. The reviews are being way too harsh because of the massive hype it could never live up to.

It looks fun from the little bit of streams i have watched but I'm sure in 3 months of patching it will be great. I'll look into it then.

Seems to be how they have to do it to get all the quirks and bugs out as well as gamer input.

Denuvo was beaten for Tomb Raider I'd expect to see Doom pretty soon.

So am definitely going to get no mans sky- it looks like a perfect relaxing game to play while high or even tripping.

I never play video games on paychedelics because the violence bothers me when tripping, but exploring planets and space sounds perfect.

Imagine a game like this with online and VR compatible, shit will be crazy.

Once quantum computers are refined and implemented into things like personal computers the possibilities for games like NMS will be incredible...

Out of all fairness, the developers sort of brought that on themselves. There are so many contradictory things said about the game. They purposely kept things vague as possible to keep that hype and trick everyone into buying the game. Cant say I blame them, but they do take some fault in the hype.

Its impossible to meet other people in the game? Fine, then tell us that. Tell us its not multiplayer. Dont just say a vague remark about "the universe is so big its improbable". Well no, its impossible because there is no netcode for meeting people. Another time they said a "find your friend" feature will be in the game.

Hope they add to the game and make it better; however, ive seen what happens to games like this in the past. The developer already has the vast majority of the money they were going to make which throws incentive for new content out of the window. Or even worse they try to sell expensive DLCs that should have been in the original game to begin with.

Lucky for me I backed out of my preorder right away. I could've got it the day it came out for like 70$ And initially did but then said nope!

However I think this will be a huge year in gaming. Battlefield 1 is going to be an amazing step forward imo ,in fps at least. There's tons others God of War 4 being one of them.

Like I said in the thread in the Gaming Grotto, I'm sorry if I'm pissing on anyone's fun here. I do not mean to do that and if you enjoy the game, the better for you. Go have fun! Buuuuut having said that:

Not digging it. At all.

I'll admit the game world is huge. But what use is that if it's all just randomly generated setpieces? What fun is exploration if the dev's never really made anything worth exploring? All you're getting is rehashes of the same stuff with mild variations. A different colour or something like that. A slightly different thing that slowly kills you on a planet. Same goes for the animals: put together from some parts that are pulled randomly from a bag and given a new paintjob. And random generation, by its very nature, always delivers very shallow results. There is absolutely no depth to it. For a game where the focus is on exploration, I think random generation is kind of lazy.

At least, I think that's where the focus of this game is. It can't be anything else since everything else in this game is shit, to put it bluntly. Combat is very underwhelming. The survival mechanics boil down to a mind numbingly repetitive cycle of 'grind stuff, make stuff to grind stuff more easily etc'.

And that's all there is to do, really. Go to uneventful and eventually boring places that only differ very slightly in insiginifcant ways and grind away.

One mechanic I thought was kind of cool, was slowly unraveling and learning alien languages so you can communicate with them more easily. That could've been cool. But that's completely negated by how few NPC's there are and how uninteresting and static they are. They just sit there. That's all they do. You will never, ever find an NPC except on static places. And even then they serve no other purpose than buying or selling stuff. They all could've been replaced by a computer with foreign versions of Ebay on them.

There's another space sim called Freelancer. It has plenty of exploration. An actual economy where it pays off to look where a commodity is cheapest and most expensive, so you can do some trading. Illegal goods even, if you so desire. You can land on planets and take jobs. It has fun combat. A decent story line. Others flying around in space. NPC's that attack you if you joined the wrong faction. Police forces regularly scanning your ship for contraband. Multiplayer that still thrives today in very interesting ways.

It managed to do all of that and more. And that game was made 13 years ago.

And let's discuss the state in which this game launched for PC. It's shameful. Especially after two delays. Barely anyone can run it on PC because how demanding and poorly optimized it is. It's not even the Crysis kind of demanding that'll make your GPU melt for awesome graphics. No, if you get it to run at all, you're treated to stuttering and weird, ugly, grainy pop ins.

Is that worth 60 bucks? No. Not by a very long shot.

Couple all of that with a HUUUUGE hype. Finally a game in this genre that mostly died a silent death but many people (like myself) still love! It's no wonder people are severely let down, feeling lied to and betrayed. I know hype is something the public does, but as someone pointed out in this thread: at least some part of the blame goes to the devs and how vague they left everything. Of course people are going to be disappointed.

And again, I don't fully blame the devs. I'm sure they just wanted to make a great game. I acknowledge their best intentions. Great. I fully believe a lot of what is bad about this game can be brought back to pressure Sony put on them. But that does not change the product they released. It does not suddenly make the end result any better..

Sorry if I sound bitter or overly critical. And like I said, I don't want to ruin anyone's fun or tell them what they can and can't enjoy. This is all just my opinion.

To end on a more lighthearted note:
