If it doesn't smell or taste inky -- if the smell/taste is pleasant/mushroomy, then it's good to eat. That's the guideline for this genus.

i've noticed that inedible Agaricus sometimes smell like a weird bleach-type scent. maybe that's the inky smell you're talking about, elprawn, but i've noticed distinctly inky scented ones as well.
either way, it doesn't smell appetizing at all if it's one of those two scents.

It's possible. I'm sure I've not smelled them all.

I swear that at least half of the ones I find turn out not to be edible.
I don't know if I'm unlucky or that's par for the course around here. Most of them are near the road, anyway, so maybe it's for the best.

i know what you mean.
if i find them in abundance, i'm sure to find that they're the stinky type.
it's when i find one, solitary, beautiful specimen that it turns out to be the tasty sort.

also make sure there is no yellow bruising on agaricus
-------------------- I give you the choice of 2 pills.
With each containing one of the following: Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk? Didn't think so. This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.
