Discussion on mushroom safety
    #23545025 - 08/15/16 06:51 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I've been reading a lot about mushrooms latley. Anyway I came across this article...

https://www.shroomery.org/6301/Fatal-Poisoning-After-a-Group-of-People-Voluntarily-Consumed-Hallucinogenic-Mushrooms

And it just got me to thinking... How safe am I really eating these....

I know there's the information saying no one has ever died from psilocybin mushrooms in particular.

But to think that if there was one bad mushie hiding in a wild bunch and that overlooking it could lead to serious injury is somewhat worrisome. You know taking a fun and exciting thing and turning it all bad.

Idk what I'm really trying to accomplish with this post. Maybe just some general information from some knowledgable folk about mushroom safety.

Always buy from someone you're 100% sure has good ones, never buy then without someone you know and trust have tried it before.

You can always post for identification.
Growing them will be the best option you have out there.

I agree with those statements. But this article is directly linking his poisoning to the hallucinogenic species psilocybe semilenceate. It sounds suspicious like maybe he ate something other than that and no one ever really figured it out. But overall the article points to that one variety.

Growing them takes the research skill level of a 4th grader and a few hundred doll hairs if you want to get fancy

4 Rules of Mushrooming

1. Water wet
2. Fire hot
3. Yes, cars are very fucking real
4. No, you cannot fly

Erowid has two reports of fatalities with high levels of psilocin in the bloodstream.

https://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_death.shtml

Assuming .6 percent psilocin by weight of mushroom and 100% of the compound absorbed into bloodstream (.2 is more like average, and 50% absorption).

1st ~ 25 dried grams. 150 if you take the average values.  She has a heart transplant 10 years prior

2nd ~3350 dried grams. 20,100 @ average potency values.  (extract?)

[copied from my other post]

It seems to me like it would be impossible to achieve a level of 4000mg/L of psilocin in the blood by simply injesting mushrooms.  Does anyone know of another method of extraction of pure psilocin besides methanol or acetic acid (both which result in a fairly large volume of liquid / psilocin?  (seems like you would die before you could drink that much methanol or acetic extract)

Best idea, growing your own is fun too (if you don't have a moldy kit or something)

You guys saying grow your own; did you not read the article?
This is not a case of misidentification. The victim only consumed psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps). There's a summary towards the bottom if you don't have time to read the whole thing.

Sorry, my bet, didn't take the time indeed. Psilocybe semilanceata are very hard to grow your own...

I know yeah but that wasn't my point. Even if you did manage to grown your own, it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference because they are still the same mushroom which was the cause of death, allegedly.

No it was probably the amount of mushrooms he took instead of the mushroom itself that caused his death

So how would growing your own change that? Do you eat less when you grow your own?

In a controlled environment you have much more control over what you're dealing with.  In nature there is always a much higher chance you would have a poisonous mushroom similar looking near the species you're hunting.

If you read through that case report it is revealed that the man in question was most likely eating hallucinogens while hunting for more of them.  That right there is a huge risk.

Hmm, I honestly think that taking the mushrooms while hunting for them isn't a great idea at all. So maybe hunt for them and eat them with friends at home. His friends didn't know either what he had been eating before so nobody was holding him back for eating more.
