Smoking: The Meditation of the Westerner * 1
    #23545561 - 08/15/16 10:14 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So today was my attempt at a third day without nicotine. It was rough but as I went a long with my day I kept looking into the concept of smoking as I tried to convince myself that there was a natural and better alternative to experience what I feel when smoking a cigarette. I then looked into what it was that kept me smoking, and I looked at my mental state without nicotine and it felt very messy and fragile. It was at that moment that I realized exactly what a cigarette does for me. It calms the mind. It slows it down, it makes it easier to focus on not focusing on stuff. It puts me in a mini meditative trance.

Smoking is the quickest way for that feeling to come to one. We work so hard at getting what we want and when we want relief we aren't willing to work for it, the western man wants the quickest way to get it cause it takes so much time to achieve a clear and calm mind. Smoking is the meditation of the westerner. I then later in the night bummed 2 cigarettes of some hot girls in the street and hung out with them. The way of the west has gotten back to me.

yeah, smoking helps ease the nerves which most people don't want to work to calm themselves/make you feel better, but also any addiction such as eating a ton when you are sad is like this

Thats some insightful thoughts there my friend!

Yes, cigs definitely have a calming, almost meditative quality. But the withdrawals are the shitty opposite: high-strung, anxious, and irritable. Oh the Ying and Yang of tobacco.

One thing i hope to never get in the habit of....

Great OP, I agree completely.

It actually makes more sense to me after framing the addiction this way why I've been able to beat every addiction I've ever had (there's been a few..), other than nicotine. It's always been the breath part of smoking that I love so much, and focusing on my breath, as I do when I meditate, has been the path to some truly profound states of mind.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

I only ever really smoked when i was at work, to actually get a break, and when i was shit faced because the synergies of alcohol and chain smoking are pretty good.

So glad i was never a big smoker and quit 2 years ago outside of once in a blue moon.

That is true, people are willing to go a long way to calm themselves, without realizing that they're trading it for further stress.

Thank you man. The withdrawls are terrible but next week I plan on giving it another shot. The summer will be over and i'll have more time taken up. It'll be easier to forget about smoking then. Definitely not a good habit.

Same here! The breath part usually leads to a mini burst of inspiration for me.

How have you felt since quitting it? Would you say its easier to relieve stress without it?

American Indians have used nicotine for similar effects for a long time.

Of course Nicotine calms you down, it is a break from your day to day routine in combination with the drug. It is a time where all you have to worry about is smoking your cigarette. But after a while,a cigarette is just an addiction. And in the end, you don't need any substance to calm down your mind and be in a peace full state. You're just addicted, that is the truth.
