Living is unnecessary?
    #23544318 - 08/15/16 02:51 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Living is unnecessary.

If true, why?
If false, why?

Brainstorm and post thoughts.

Nothing is necessary.

Life creates the idea of necessity, so I'm afraid it's not a really clever question.

If the dead were conscious, wouldn't they prefer to feel the wind on their faces, to drink beer and have sex?

Preference is not necessity.

Didn't know you were that fragile where lack of beer sex or wind would end you.

No stoicism, no resilience. What a shame.

Indeed, otherwise there would be no presence of something that is necessary, since nothing is the anti-something in the dualistic world.

Nope, choice

My life is not necessary, just my preference to continue it.

Living is the path we take as we circle a drain into death.

And yes living is necessary because otherwise you'd be dead, this isn't a profound question.

Excellent point, to actually bring a reference to somebody in space and time, and then you can have a meaningful conversation.  Example -  Is living unnecessary for John, who has been on life support and declared brain dead?  I know it wouldn't be for me, in fact I have a living will specifically stating to pull the plug in such a scenario.

--------------------
Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Necessary from a cosmic perspective, no. I don't believe so. There's nothing to suggest anything other than that objectively, life, like anything else, is just happenstance.

That doesn't mean one can't find subjective meaning or just appreciate the fact that through the right circumstances, they happen to exist.

Unless perhaps they're brain-dead John on life support.

Necessary, something that is required, needed, essential. But think about it, is ANYTHING really needed? Is even existence needed or required? Or is it all subjective? In the grand picture of things, does there even HAVE to be a picture?

No

We just hope and want. Personally I think these hopes and wants for existence and purpose are some of the best things about human mind, we can imagine and hope and give ourselves meaning even if there inherently none for us in this universe. Creating personal purpose is much better than predefined courses of necessity.
