Hey guys, so I've been interested in mycology for a few years now and have just started to practice the skill of collection and identification. I'm surprised at how addicting it is to go out there and scour around my semi-urban environment. It's rained for a solid week here in North Eastern Ohio and there is all manner of fungi EVERYWHERE... I went for a gander around my neighborhood today as Temps seemed agreeable and the rain subsided for a bit. I found several little fairy circles around the place, and bagged whatever looked eerily familiar. I swear these things practically call out your name sometimes, Hey...
Anyway here's details and photos. This will be my first ID attempt so please bear with my ignorance. I look forward to getting more involved with the Shroomery community!
Habitat: Both specimens were found after several days of rain and high humidity on nice urban lawns, ones that are well watered, fertilized, etc. Both specimens were found in and amongst the grass, appearing to me to be growing directly out of the soil. Specimen #2 however was found underneath a large tree, and the collected mushrooms of 'Specimen 2' come from under two separate trees so could possible be different. I will specify further on...
Gills: Specimen 1: not attached, whitish cream colored. S2: grayish to brown black, appear to be attached
Stem: S1: 4.5 - 6 cm, not hollow, fibrous, bruised a brownish? Toward the bottom and perhaps flecks of brown towards the top, mostly a creamy beige color... No visible blue bruising. S2: 4-8cm, white, hollow, no visible bruising or mottled coloration, very much all white.
Cap: S1: golden cream color with visible outer ring, more pronounced in juveniles, soft gold coloration turned brownish S2: ranging from a creamy white juvenile to a grey and defeated looking adult cap
Both Caps seem more rounded, even pyramidal at juvenile stage then flare upward slightly at adulthood, more pronounced flare in s2.
Spore print color: S1: After 30 minutes, unnoticeable on white paper except for off-white looking shiny spore pattern? S2: after 30 minutes - dark dark brown, almost black, very pronounced and visible.
Bruising: S1: somewhat brown looking bruising where picked? S2: no visible bruising
Other information: S2: has earthy, almost psilocybe (from my limited experience) to shitake scent
I am headed out this arvo to collect several additional groupings I've noticed around the place... I will post an updated thread with more pics and spore print info.. I know I need to be patient. Just wanted to start with this and see if anyone in the community can help a brother out. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers ya'll.
The image of the shrooms grouping in the lawn is of s2 yesterday, before they browned and opened up. The shrooms on the wax paper are specimen 2, on printing paper is specimen 1, and the only spore print I took a photo of is of s2 after 1 hour (on printing paper, under a cup) *will upload new pics and spore prints tomorrow plus additional.
