First time agar!

Yo whats good everybody. Just did my first Agar pour into five petri dishes. I dont have a SAB yet so I just found a lunch box and cleaned it out with alcohol and used that as a "SAB" but anyways..I made wayyy to much agar lol and rn the petri dishes are cooling but they're out in the open. My question is: What are the chances of contaimanates? There currently sitting on a table in the middle of my room with the left over agar sitting ontop of the stack to prevent condensation. I'll probably be alright right? I plan on giving two of the five dishes a drop from the syringe and hopefully transfer spores to the other three in a few days
What do you think man?

I don't think a lunchbox is big enough to actually be an SAB. How did you pour in that thing?
Do you have a cardboard box or anything?

Ehh it was big enough. Completely enclosed space other than the opening where I did the pouring. But man its already said and done so I can only hope. How long does the agar take to harden?

it hardens at about 45 Celsius(give or take your agar concentration and agar purity). it's not based on time.

Alright thanks, Bodhisatta. Should have read your tips before I poured..I poured my agar pretty damn hot and a few have condensation. In a stack of five Ive got a big mug filled with hot water on top. Hope its all G

One more thing, I dont have an inoculation loop but I do have cotton tipped applicators can I use those? It sounds like I shake the syringe, flame the metal tip, put a little drop in middle of dish to cool it down, then make a few more drops around the dish and spread it with a loop or in this case an applicator?

you sure can but they have to be sterile. if they're not you can wrap them in foil and autoclave them. I would only use one or two drops to a whole plate. the first drop to cool down the needle, spray that one somewhere not on a plate.

I've started using the looped end of extra tattoo needles I've had laying around for years as inoculation loops.....use em once and toss em.....they work great too

Thanks a ton foi the info Bodhisatta, good vibes man. So the cooling drop is just on a paper towel or some shit then the first in the middle then second wherever and spread with an applicator. The is it's cotton tipped..won't the spores just absorb into the cotton?

I was wondering this as well since I had a couple ATL swabs....I rolled one on an agar plate to see if it would work.....

I would squirt the first few drops onto the floor of the SAB or a towel then if you want to use the cotton swab squirt like 5 drops onto it then swab the tip on the dish. Try your method too squirt 2-3 drips on the dish and then spread. See which works better
I usually have success with spore swabs to agar dishes. They're made from raping the gills though
