If I air dry and put into a mason jar...

If I pick mushrooms, set them on paper towels and allow to air dry for a week or however long it takes. If I then put them in mason jars and store them in a cool dark place. What is the possible length of time they will remain potent?

No, that would be completely inadequate. They will rot. If you are going to close up shrooms in a jar or bag they need to be cracker-dry, as from a food dehydrator.

So what he is trying to say is that: If you seal partially dried mushrooms into an airtight container (or any for that matter) the small amount of moisture left in the material would propogate bacterial growth in a very rapid manner. You need to either use a dehydrator (my choice) or air dry in front of a fan for 24 hours and seal the mushrooms in an airtight container with some desiccant. You want the shrooms to be cracker dry. This means that if you try to bend or squeeze the fully dried specimen they will break or turn into dust.
If you store your mushrooms in this manner you can expect the potency to last for about six months (conservatively).

Ok, I will probably get a dehydrator and some dissecant. At 6 months are they just beginning to lose potency or will they already have lost most?
Anyone ever try some shrooms that have been stored for a year? Do you get any effect?

I had 3 ounces go rotten in my first season when I didn't listen to people. Molded up in less than a month.
Dehydrator 170 degrees F. Let cool so they don't suck moisture in the jar. Takes like 5 minutes. Add desiccant. Let cool to room temp once in the jar. Throw them in the freezer. When you want them again, take the jar out and let warm to room temp. Remove lid grab shrooms throw back in freezer. It'll last at least a year.

That's fine too just get every drop out. Store in a cool dry and dark place. Give them a smell and inspection when you open them.

Perfect thanks. I'm pretty sure ill wind up doing this. I may have to pick some tomorrow before I even have my equipment. I hope it doesn't ruin things letting them sit out for a couple days first.

a couple days isn't terrible but I wouldn't air dry past that. I personally don't airdry anymore I just dehydrate but even so the longest I have stored them is 7 months and I couldn't tell a difference. I store my shrooms in vacuum-sealed bags in a dark cool closet.

A week when I fan dried my first ever PE fruits. I wanted to die.
Oven drying or dehydrator is the best course of action. Depening on how humid your environment is, fan drying can be somewhere between "not bad" and "piss fucking poor". Even in the most dry environments I would just dehydrate or oven dry them, even if just a little bit to squeeze the last of the moisture out.
Forget all about dessicants, totally unneccessary if you are storing in an airtight container and your fruits are cracker dry. desiccant gave me a lot more trouble than it has saved me from TBH. I was getting my shrooms cracker dry and the silica was just hydrating them again because I thought it was dry when it wasn't.
