I don't really think it's a good idea.  The point of putting the cake on top of a lid or some foil is to give it a barrier from the perlite.  If you sit the cake in water, it'll probably get mushy and nasty and contaminated.  The perlite holds moisture, but just enough to make it humid inside the chamber.  If you've dunked and rolled your cake, it shouldn't really need more moisture other than occasional misting.  Do you know what kinds of chemicals are in those beads?  I'd be afraid they'd leach into the cake and kill the mycelium.

Whoa there fella lol. Ok it's a very common practice to put a substrate partway into water, especially if there's a massive flush you need the water for. This is called bottom dunking. The idea is to change the water out every 24 hours. This is only advisable when there's a big pinset. Otherwise it's just not needed.

Yeah, I'd just leave it on foil on top of the perlite. I've heard of people doing this kinda shit before. Sat them on these water balls.. it didn't go well. IIRC the fruits were waterlogged pumpkin looking fruits that were covered in bacteria.

No, I get bottom watering, but that's different than sticking it in a tub of hydrated goo.  That was my point.

:super: yeah guess the wording made me think you were saying water would cause that. Everytime someone wants to add more humidity, I wanna shoot myself. Humidity is like #3 on the list of importance in fruiting. Its like people have this aversion to just fuckin misting when it needs to be misted

IMO the most important thing anyone should be doing is trying to master the art of surface hydration (misting when needed).

I agree with that statement 100%.  Its easier to fix a dry cake than a wet one.
