Testing pine pellets using the WL Tek
    #23537833 - 08/13/16 12:24 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Here is how to use pine pellets in a substrate. In this example I am using 80% water content.
This is 50g dry pine pellets, 50g dry paper pellets, 400g water, 500g total weight.

Pine contains inhibitory resins that most mycelium do not like.
Mixing the two reduces the concentration to ineffective.

----

Recipe:

50g, 50g > Paper Pellets, Pine Pellets.
2.5ml > Miracle-Gro® SPF or LPF.
0.6ml > Seaweed Fertilizer.
0.6ml > Yeast Nutrients.

----

Measure the 400g of hot boiled water, added to a bowl with lid.
Add the 50g of pine pellets, mix untill mostly broken up.

Microwave for 8 minutes on full power, fully covered.
Measure and add more boiling water, 450g total.

Add the SPF, YN and seaweed fertilizer, mix.
Add the 50g of paper pellets, and mix well.

Microwave for 88 seconds, with lid on.
Leave and remove after 2 hours.

Work fully covered.

I guess you have not seen these yet, these are an outdoor grow:

SPF + YN, paper, compost and pine.

Here is proof that pine can be used along side the WL Tek.

Time to respond (TTR): 12-18 hours.

Nice... Btw, I noticed you updated the Tek with seaweed fertilizer. Your Tek before the update was 0.6% added Nitrogen. What is it after the seaweed fertilizer was added?

Yes after the update. I updated it to include the seaweed fertilizer.
Originally used as an Iodine source but growth was improved.

The seaweed adds a variety of usable nutrients.
There's 0.62% nitrates in the seaweed.

The label does say it can be mixed with other fertilizers.

Very safe to use, low nitrates, and organic.

Slightly stronger and faster than the basic WL Tek.
Variation winning again, even with pine wood.

Doing some research it turns out the resins are a complex carbon, hydrogen and oxygen arrangement.
Classed as essential oleoresin's, pine over produces oleoresin to an inhibitory effect.

Cinnamic acid - C9 H8 02. Benzoic acid - C7 H6 O2.

I like the tek but most people who grow oysters on here do it on a large scale....it doesn't seem like you could scale up a substrate like this very easily....can you sterilize all that stuff without a microwave?

You should be able to make it in the same way as you do now.
I only use a microwave for smaller hobby sizes.

Just add the additives to your water.

It seems the oleoresin's count as a source of carbon.

Oleoresin's and other nutrients present in pine have a positive impact at a usable ratio.

Counting as a rich carbon source, and working like carbohydrates.
They also work like salt or sugar, too much is inhibitory.

Work clean, chance of mold spores germinating.

Anyone willing to try pine wood juice agar? Saturate with water and strain.
Results should be growth, with limited contamination chance.

No idea how much to put to agar, sorry.

Colonizing fully in the dark, same as normal.
