north of it is just perlite border for contams. I always usually place about 1in to the top. clean edge with lysol wipes and a spray... as I said...I know everyone has preferences to cleanliness, but I really am a clean freak....If I ever see any discolor, I throw out the whole jar....some guys try to save, I figure better safe than sorry later.
thanks for the input tho...cheers

Perlite is not a filter material. We use a dry vermiculite layer for that and we ensure it stays dry by removing the foil after inoculation.

This is absolutely the first I'm ever hearing of perlite being used as a filter.

I have read some where that RR (i guess) revived a 10 years old print.

Yep. He used lab grade rattlesnake venom to pull it off. Requires a background check and costs 800 bux per gram or something like that.

I know the guy made a typo but it is used as a filter in industry.
wiki reckons 8% of perlite is used as a "filter aid" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perlite#Production_and_uses
I have wondered if it could be used as a filter on jars, for people who find it difficult to source stuff. I have used silicone hose as filters on jars, stuffing them with sponges. You could have sponge at the bottom and then perilite on top of that, the sponge holding it, possibly with more sponge on top to contain it. If crushed up it would be more compact, could be a use for the dust at the end of a bag.
Most people growing PF cakes will also have perlite, but some people growing on grains may have no need for verm, but may have perlite.
I doubt the verm or perlite will have the micron rating of recommended fitler material. But if it is thick enough it should do the job, in another thread I was saying if you had a sieve with 1mm holes then lots of 0.9mm diameter polystyrene balls would fall through. If you had 50 sieves on top of each other I expect few would make it to the bottom. My silicone tube sponge filters would have 1-2 inches of sponge in them.

Would hydrating old spores potentially help them germinate on agar? I have a Tamp print that I'm assuming is a few years old and for the life of me I can't get anything to grow from it.

so, dejarred yesterday, beautiful smell fruity I like to say....the spores colonized the jars nicely. took out yesterday and dunked for 24 hrs...placed in tubs today and everything looks healthy and nice. Will take a pic daily to upload in case I am completely retarded...
I understand some people reluctance to say what a time frame for spores is, so I will see....after 5 yrs I was kinda on the back burner as well, but hey what have I got to lose...if they grow awesome...if not..oh well...not gonna cry bout it, will just order new spores and try again...
BUT if they do work, then the way I had them stored would work for anyone..
will upload pics tomorrow morn, and every morn until I see growth..
Cheers W

Fruity/mushroomy is good, fruity/sweet is bad.
It can be hard to describe smells properly sometimes, however once you smell the good and very distinct smell of healthy mycelium it becomes easy to recognize.
I have used old prints as well as old syringes with success. Properly made prints and/or syringes remain viable for a long time. They might not be ideal past a certain point, but I'm not sure anyone can really say definitively when that point pivots.
Also hope you gave them a nice roll in vermiculite after your dunk.
Good luck on your grow and post back with those pics!

Cut the foil down to the circumference of the cake. In a 0 shape rather than a o shape. I love BRF cakes. Never ceases to amaze me those little cock suckers!

ok, I will do it, but could you explain the reason. I love how they are growing nice and clean. very nice, almost every cake has growth on them except like 4 out of 22 cakes..the mycelium is however continuing to grow and look so strong.

Because perlite can't evaporate water with foil covering the top of it, nor can air flow up through the perlite at all. Big flat surfaces ruin air flow in a box with holes.

Yap. That's why you'll see a lot of people just use jar lids as opposed to using foil.
Unless you need those jar lids to keep colonizing new stuff.

My jar lids started to rust.
