Spirituality is something that is often not well understood. People Often think of spirituality as being about superstition, new age nonsense, religious dogma or irrational Mumbo jumbo.
However, spirituality is a highly rational and logical lifestyle based on the regular use of powerful disciplines for the transformation of consciousness - a lifestyle that is of universal value, especially for drug users.
1. Human Life is the experience of consciousness . The quality of our consciousness determines the quality of our life . Therefore developing and maintaining the best possible state of consciousness is the most important undertaking in life.
2. Techniques for changing and transforming consciousness in desirable ways have been developed and refined over many thousands of years by generation after generation of people and cultures that made this undertaking their top priority and dedicated entire lifetimes and many of their best minds to this project.
3. Yoga, meditation, chanting and ritual are the highly advanced product of this process- highly refined and effective techniques and technologies for the transformation of consciousness.

Inner peace, bliss, states of ecstasy, serenity, compassion, wisdom and love are examples of the qualities of consciousness which these spiritual technologies cultivate.
Essentially, the goal and purpose and effect of spirituality is the same as the Goal, purpose and effect of drug use.
We all use drugs in an effort to elevate, transform or improve our states of consciousness .
Spirituality serves the same purpose, offering profound transformations of consciousness without the ingestion of drugs (although drugs can sometimes be used to further enhance the process such as the tradition of Yogis smoking large amounts of hash).
So although drug users often find spirituality unappealing, this is often because they don't really understand that spirituality is a set of time tested, proven techniques for attaining altered states of consciousness such as peace and bliss.

This is why spirituality can be so helpful for people struggling with drug addictions . It provides a safer, healthier way to heal the emotional wounds and fill the emotional voids that drugs attempting and failing to mask.
I point this out to explain that far from being "anti-thinking", spirituality such as yoga and meditation is the product of very clear and lucid thinking , and is simply a more sustainable means to the same ends that drug users are pursuing .
Although adopting spiritual disciplines is not essential to recovering from addictions, it can certainly be enormously helpful in this process. Once you learn to unlock states of tranquility and joy without drugs , it stands to reason that dependence on destructive methods like opiates and cocaine will decrease .
It is very hard to stop using a drug until you have found an alternative way to meet the emotional needs that drive the addiction. This is where spirituality can be so powerful.
For example, it has been scientifically proven that yoga releases large amounts of GABA in the brain, producing a euphoric, benzo like state of relaxation. Naturally accessing this state will Alleviate the anxiety that drives a lot of drug use.
As you can clearly see, the logic and effectiveness Of spiritual disciplines are as universal as the emotional needs they fulfill.
One does not need to be born in India or raised in a Buddhist family to benefit from spiritual practices, nor do you need to believe or act in any way that contradicts with logic or reason.
One needs not believe in anything superstitious or supernatural.
All you need to know is that life is consciousness and the quality of consciousness Is positively transformed by spiritual disciplines .

You need to want to quit said drug I was just on to someone about how hwoin wont fill the hole, and will ruin yor personality and your health.
very good post. You usually have thoughful things on the subject
Im not sure if I buy meditation and am distrustworthy of what most say about budhissm. I just heard a pali scholar go off on sam harris, and mention that the chinese and japanese traditions are very twisted. He was into Theravada Bhuddism in Laos and Cambodia himseld(a bas le ciel on youtube) his channel has drited from that to more about efective actevism, specifically for veganism though
Ive met people who do things like smoke cigerettes, and do psychedelics. It isnt an instant cure, but the positive momenbtum is powerful. Those that only see colors, I dont understand. It was some of the deepest compassion Ive felt, and the most powerful awearness of connection to space and time, and the stillness of the present, the importanc of people. We have a spiritually deadened culture though, and talking about filling your vaccume with this abstract thing is confusing to people.
what Im saying is, doing is not enough. meditstion or doing the right drugss with he wrong mindset wont change a thing. we arent taught much of anything in this culture except to work and accept death, because life is lame. Its a very childish culture in my experiance, despite being effective economically
I only scanned, may have gone way off base, not awake as Id like to be
